Property Description

Newly opened in January 2018, The Bristol Wing was built in the refurbished Grade II listed old police headquarters in the heart of Bristol City Centre. We have a mix of private, ensuite and dorm rooms with great communal spaces on the ground floor and an award winning cafe on site offering tasty breakfast, great coffee and a super fresh lunch menu.

Our ethical and environmental credentials are second to none. We have a newly refurbed building designed to minimise our negative impact on the world (solar panels, high levels of insulation, double glazed windows etc). All of our food is sourced locally and we offer opportunities for young people to gain valuable work skills and experience.

The Bristol Wing is owned and managed by YMCA Bristol as a social enterprise - so any profits we make are reinvested in supporting young people who are homeless in the city.

The Bristol Wing is slap bang in the middle of Bristol City Centre. We are a stone’s throw from Bristol Bus Station, 20 minutes’ walk from Temple Meads Railway Station and only meters away from local bus stops. Bristols best shopping is on the door step, whether you want the independent shops of Park Street and Clifton, the big name brands in Cabot Circus or quirky market stalls in St Nicholas's Market, we're with walking distance. Bristol's historic harbour side is only ten minutes’ walk.

Ideally suited to single travellers, couples and families we have a mixture of rooms including dorm rooms, double rooms and family rooms - some with shared bathrooms and some ensuite.

Overview

Fun fact about The Bristol Wing: we're based in a Grade II-listed old police headquarters. But don't worry, we're super fun and friendly! We recently renovated with a focus on being ethically and environmentally sound, so we can have as positive an impact on the world as possible – think solar panels, insulation, double-glazing. And all the food sold in our on-site café is locally sourced (though we've also got a small kitchen if you prefer to make your own snacks). We're owned by YMCA Bristol as a social enterprise, so all our profits go to supporting homeless young people in our city – how cool is that?

Location

We're right in the heart of Bristol, so if you're coming from the airport you can take the Bristol Airport Flyer bus to Bristol bus station – from there we're just a 3-minute walk. If you're arriving by train, we're a 20-minute walk from Temple Meads station. Bristol's best shopping is all within a 15-minute walk, whether you want indie shops, big-name brands or quirky market stalls. Be sure to pick up a free city map from reception to get your bearings quickly.

Rooms and Dorms

We've got a mix of dorm rooms and private rooms, some with en-suites – whatever you choose, you'll get bed linen for free. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also included, and you'll have a security locker to keep your electronics safe. Getting around with your luggage is super-easy too, as we have an elevator to all floors.

Extras and activities

If you're looking to relax after a day on the Harbourside – or a long night in Bristol's nightlife quarters – head over to one of our common areas for some downtime. There's plenty of comfy seating to lounge on, so check out our book exchange to find your new favourite read. There're also board games if that's more your style.

Was a great place. Very friendly staff. Actually went out of there way. In Bristol this is the place to stay. Found it from the directions no problem, that doesn't happen that often. Room was clean, as well the washrooms were great. Nice glass elevator.

Bristol wing was an interesting stay. The Hostel itself is very nice and has alot of potential but is populated with very unique people and the staff are nice but not the most effective or informative. I would stay here again but it was a new experience, Bristol as a whole was unique.

At first sight, the hostel looks good. The kitchen is well equipped, modern and clean. The receptionist with pink hair was friendly. However they're the only positives. To pay 30 pounds for a 10 bed dorm is mental, but to then have to make your own bed is a joke. The breakfast is FOUR POUNDS and is literally cereal and toast, and then towel rental being 3 pounds is extortionate when you consider you've paid 30 quid already.Way too overpriced, takes the pi** to be honest.Really hope staff paid well.

Location is central, staffs were nice, but I dont expect a bunk bed with 3 floors and I need to stay on the top, it's hard for me to climp up and down all day :(. The washing room is so dirty and can be improved, there was no shower gel or even washing hand gel. I was not provided tower and need to make my bed by myself when I arrive ( I thought there will be someone who make mattress before customers arrive) At 3am in the morning, the fire alarm keeps ringing and stop for a while with no announ

Great location and good common areas. Rooms and bathrooms are dirty! Dust and mold and coffee stains...By my last day, none of the toilets on my floor worked. Room was very noisy.

The room was quite dirty as well as the bathrooms. The toilets were also constantly getting clogged and one of the sinks overflowed so they kept having to close down the bathrooms. There are only two single person bathrooms to split between several dorm rooms, so between them being closed for maintenance and so many other people trying to use them at the same time it was very inconvenient.

The bathrooms were disgusting, they need to be checked more than once a day if over 25 people are using the 2 bathrooms. Always out of toilet paper and no soap to wash hands. Just filth everywhere, green and black mould in the showers. The 3 story bunks were made horribly. You can only lay in these beds you can’t sit up and there’s nowhere but the floor in your dorm to sit. The bed felt dirty and since I had to make my own bed I got to see the wonderful stains left from other people.

We booked a four bedroom dorm and they moved us to a 12 bedroom dorm last minute which was very different from the last time I stayed (which was a 4 bedroom dorm). The beds were very uncomfortable, the toilets were very dirty and the room had a bad odour. I would not book the hostel again because of the bad experience at the 12 bedroom dorm.
