It's an 11-minute walk to Old Street underground where you can hop on Northern line trains. Getting to us from Gatwick Airport takes just under an hour by train and underground, and just over an hour from Stansted Airport. From Heathrow, it takes about 80 minutes using the Piccadilly and Northern lines.

Rooms and Dorms

Get cosy with your new roommates in our mixed and female-only dorms, or treat yourself to a stay in a private room if you like your own space. Whichever option you go for, fresh linen is included in the price – and you'll have your own secure locker to keep your bag in. Our rooms have keycard access for extra security, and each bunk has a personal reading light so you don't have to keep everyone awake while you race through that can't-put-down novel from our book exchange.

Test your hand-eye coordination at our foosball table or bust out the board games in our common room. When hunger sets in, join us for dinner at our on-site restaurant or throw together something scrumptious in our big communal kitchen. Very good value for money and a good location for me to stay while I was doing an art exhibition at the The Truman’s brewery in Brick Lane.

Generally it’s a good deal however our room ended up being on the Main Street side which meant we heard everything that was going on on the street during the night. It might be less noisy in winter when the windows are closed. The bunk beds have a suitcase-size storage cages under them which was good yet you need a padlock (can be bought at the hostel). The reception girls were awesome and helpful!

Hard to sleep as right next to a nightclub. Very hot building (there was a fan though to be fair). Very central location if you want to explore Shoreditch.

The toilets in the room could use the staff starting to use bleach instead of just soap and water and a prayer. They are all really nice people working here, but a simple change in the bucket would stop the toilets stinking. It is quite a mess in here due to the construction. A new sofa in the lounge would really go a long way as they actually smell of sweat and stink. Again friendly people here who made it still somehow ok. Please take note hostel and try and put in a few cleaning changes.

The staff were lovely and the hostel itself was in a great location to access the city. The hostel is located right next door to a nightclub that does not close til 4am so there is literally people screaming outside your window all night! It was also very hot (36 degrees) during our stay and while fans were provided this did not suffice for a 12 bed dorm and due to noise pollution we could not open the window. Probably the worst night sleep I've ever had in a hostel.

Staff very helpful, our room was dirty and smelt mouldy, was a ground floor room and seemed to struggle with any sort of fresh air getting into the room

Friendly staff and excellent location but: 1- you can't really sleep as loud thumping music from neighboring establishments, 2- beds did not have lights or a power outlet close by, so you have to all cluster next to the outlet by the door to charge your phones/laptops, super inconvenient and annoying, and finally 3- really not clean: our toilet was not cleaned once during my stay. I do not expect luxury when I stay in hostels but cleanliness is really the bare minimum.

The hostel overall was just quite a lower quality than we expected. It was extremely dirty everywhere, maybe because of the construction happening all around the hostel right now. The sheets were comfortable but there were little holes all over the sheets and a small blood stain which was gross. Also, there were so many ants in my bathroom and lots of flys swarming the hallway. We even checked out a night early and went to another place...it was a nice location but I would not stay there again.

Shower in our room wasn't working, the toilet was dirtier than a club's, no ventilation in the room, and if we opened the window we couldn't sleep because of the noise in the street, not enough plugs in the room (and in bad locations) AND THE WHOLE PLACE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, so dust everywhere (aswell as the noise). DO NOT RECOMMEND.

We were extremely disappointed with our experience at The Dictionary Hostel. We found the staff to be rude and unwelcoming, where we did not feel comfortable at all. The hostel itself was under construction the entirety of our visit, which we felt was unsafe and we should have been made aware of this before we arrived. For whatever reason, the amenities such as bar and a roof terrace was also diminished. Overall, we were made to feel uncomfortable our entire visit and will not be returning.
