Property Description

The Doctor's House is situated on the South Coast of Sri Lanka, in a small coastal village called Madiha. We have 1 x 6 bed dorm, 3 x 4 bed dorms (all mixed) and 2 x private twin share bungalows.

It is situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in the beautiful Madiha. We are a bar/restaurant/hostel with delicious wood-fired pizza's, great espresso coffee and very friendly staff!

The pristine coastline of Madiha is perfect for swimming and the area boasts some of the best surf on the whole coast. We have 4 mixed dorm rooms (3 x 4 bed dorms and 1 x 6 bed dorm), with shared outdoor bathroom and shower facilities. The hostel accomodation is truly spectacular and there has been a huge focus on the use of natural materials and retaining the traditional style of the 200 year old building, whist adding a touch of contemporary finishes and creature comforts.

We have 2 private bungalows available, which are fitted with a very comfortable queen sized bed, mosquito net and a fan. The bungalows also have a a private balcony, some storage space and a glamorous attached outdoor bathroom. The buildings have been finished in a conformable, rustic style and there is a focus on the use of natural materials, which fits in well with the existing old buildings and the surrounding landscape. These beautifully finished bungalows have nice decor and are perfect for couples or solo travellers who want a bit more privacy and comfort.

The feature piece is certainly The Doctor's House, which is a 200 year old colonial building which has served as an Aryuvedic hospital since it was built. It has been handed down through 5 generations of Aryuvedic doctors, and has been lucky enough to fall into the hands of two young Australians.

This Dutch colonial style building is truly one of a kind. One look at it, leaves you speechless, in saying that, its spooky, yet mysterious look makes you wonder how many stories it would have to tell. This building was one of very few which survived the 2004 tsunami. View House Rules

Food is very expensive for those on low budgets. Saturday and Wednesdays are the party nights so that is a must.

Very nice and cool place and really good vibe with live music in the evening and a lot of people coming over! Really good food as well! Would rather recommend to come here to chill and hang around for a whole day than to actually sleep over here. We stayed in the privat cabanas, they’re lovely but it is almost the same as staying outside as there is no windows, so the room is not properly closed. Only a fan which makes it very hot during the night and a lot of mosquitoes.

Such a tricky hostel to rate. Some people would say its too far from Marisa, others would love it is straight on the beach. The design of the place is one of the best I seen in my life. The services are great. Amazing staff. Great rooms and good parties. If I was to be a little picky, I think the place need lockers in the dorms and locks on the doors. Simply too many people at the parties to keep the doors unlock.

Great location especially for the Wednesday and Saturday party! Food was really good, and the staff very nice. However, the place is so busy at night and there’s no option of locking the dorm doors, and the lockers provided are so small, that they hardly fit a laptop. A problem we had were the TukTuk drivers out front - we ordered a PickMe, and the TukTuk drivers started threatening our driver, until he eventually had to leave without us. This aggressiveness should definitely be tackled!

Really amazing place to stay, or just go for food. The meals/drinks are more expensive with smaller portions than other places, but amazing still! There was a bit of miscommunication between staff whilst we were there but they made up for it by upgrading us to a private room which was beautiful! Thank you!

Stayed here for 2 nights, 1 of which was a Saturday. They have a live band every Saturday where travellers come from all over the area here for it. Good music and great atmosphere. Huge outdoor area which was perfect for chilling the following day. Serve food and beer which was reasonably priced, you can also play croquet and pool. The beach is also right across the street. Rooms were very basic with no air con, and the beds stunk!! The outdoor shower was refreshing though.

    Very Good

Legit the best venue in the South. Visited the Doctors House 3 times in my time in Sri Lanka and would easily have gone again. One night I booked to stay in the rooms out the back; they're nice, clean, obviously a bit noisy but you have to expect it. They have a guard stationed outside the dorms at night so that people at the party couldn't just walk in. However, it would be pretty easy to say you were staying in the dorms and just walk on through.. so it's not super secure. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed the doctors house and would have given it a much higher score except for the fact that our room had not been cleaned properly and the staff was pretty inattentive. I get that it’s a hostel with a super laid back atmosphere, however our sheets had clearly not been changed since the last guest as there was tons of sand inside of the bed and garbage can also hadn’t been emptied. Super cool atmosphere and nice property but just a bit icky.

The doctors house is a nice place to have some (too expensive) beers. The atmosphere is nice. Nevertheless, we shouldn‘t have stayed in the hostel. It is quite anonymous and seemed that the staff is only there to have a good time. There are dogs everywhere, which is okay but you cant close the door properly such as a dog came inside our room and destroyed a backpack and a jacket. Nobody cared. Plus the 4 bed dorm is kinda a 10 bed dorm because its only separated by the bathroom

Based on the reviews I decided to stay in Doctor's house and enjoy the atmosphere as it was highly recommended. I understand it's a hostel and I was not looking for a service but not compromising on Comfort and hence booked separate room avoided bunk beds. The room was clean and bathroom was Innovative. As I said I was not expecting great service or accommodation. But the bedsheets was not clean. Infact the pillows were smelling. And there was no electricity the whole night due to power failure.
