Amazing experience! The hostel was great, clean, spacious and surprisingly nice based on how it looks raw on the outside. The host helped me very much with everything I needed and spoke really good english. I literally hiked the great wall by myself for 3 hours without meeting another person which was a unique experience! Recomend to everybody who want to get out of the normal ways and try something new!

This is by far the nicest hostel ive stayed at in China. Its more like an inn. Massive common room with comfy chairs and a tv. A bit expensive, but worth the price. Its located in a small town only a few minutes walk from the wall, although that portion of the wall is dilapidated. You can take a taxi to parts of restored wall for better photos (few tourists) Only complaint is how much they charge for bottled water. A coke was even cheaper :(

Three days at the Great Wall Box Hostel were some of the most relaxing I've experienced in awhile. Being within eyesight of the Great Wall is a thing in and of itself, and also this hostel is clean and modern. Be warned that in the off-season there may be few if any other guests, but I suspect that in the high season when temperatures are lower, it's hopping.

This seems like it is the only hostel in Gubeikou where English is spoken, and for that reason alone would be well worth it. It also is a beautiful design and comfortable. Jim is very helpful. The cats were a sweet addition.

When we arrived at the guesthouse we discovered that our rooms were not available due to emergency plumbing works. We had missed Jim's emails as they had gone to spam. Jim helped to set us up in his uncle's guesthouse down the street where we were well looked after. Jim gave us lots of good advice about hiking in the area and the food was delicious.

Never more than 2 other guests during my stay. Beautiful house. Great AC. Enjoyed the tea ceremony. Food was good but prices were high. They have ~20 cats. Jim brought us to the express bus station stop! He always seemed to have all the time in the world for his guests. Hard to not have other food options except the hostel's but overall glad I stayed. It was peaceful and I had a unique and challenging time on the Wall doing the 7 hour hike to Jinshanling.

    Very Good

    04 Jul 2019
The guy came to pick me up from Water Town, no greeting or smile, just took me there. Wasn't friendly at all. The room would have been way too small if it was full, which is wasn't! I am vegetarian, the food choices were bizarre. A FULL plate of cauliflower, a full plate or carrots OR a full plate of potatoes were the choices, each came with rice. Why not have a mixed veg plate? He explained well about the wall walk. Never introduced himself so I have no idea what he or any staff were called.

I hate to leave a negative review but to be honest I was a bit surprised by my visit after reading so many good reviews. Atmosphere was really quiet so don’t go expecting to meet people. The owner was really hard to find- He did not seem overly friendly or eager to help or offer advice and some people spent around 1 hour trying to find him just to check in. Also it was very expensive for what it was (even bottled water was $$$) On the positive side, the food was good and location good for hike
