Property Description

Overview
The Nunnery serves up the freshness of modern-day Melbourne with a side helping of 19th-century charm. What's the name about, you ask? Well, our Georgian building was built in 1888 and was an actual nunnery for 60 years. Now we're a small, unique, friendly hostel in the heart of Fitzroy. The Nuns (our staff) are all local Melbournians who can direct you to their favourite hotspots in town and help you with any questions about the hostel.

Location
Fitzroy is Melbourne's hipster hub, which means you only need to pop around the corner to find plenty of bars and shops. It'll take you 2 minutes to walk to Brunswick Street, and Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens are just across the road. We're on the main tram route, 96, but you can walk into the city centre in just over 10 minutes. It's easy to reach Melbourne Airport, you can book a Starbus for $22 and be dropped right outside our door.

Rooms and Dorms
Whatever your budget, we've got mixed, female-only dorms and private rooms to suit. Rooms described as “superior” are located next door in our Guesthouse. This building is semi attached to our main building and has its own shared facilities, for those wanting a little more privacy.

Extras and activities
We now offer new improved Free WIFI. Free bike hire! if that's your thing just head to the reception desk and pay a refundable security deposit. We also have hair dryers, straighteners, myki cards and sporting equipment to rent… just leave some ID.

We also put on free social events most days – our events can include movie nights, BBQs, soup nights, pub crawls and free breakfast every morning. There are even pancakes on Sundays.

Facilities
Staying in? Cook up a treat in our fully equipped kitchen, or swing by our lounge, balcony or courtyard areas to chill/socialise with other travellers. We also have 24-hour free baggage storage and coin operated Laundry services at your convenience.

Late Check in?...
Don’t panic our Reception is open 8:00am – 1:00am with Mother Superior available outside these hours to let you in. View House Rules

Hostel spaces are amazing, the staff and most people living there are super friendly. Location is amazing, right next to the heart of cool Fitzroy. Only down is it's quite expensive compared to other hostels, but worth it if you're willing to spend a bit more for somewhere more homely.

I booked into a 6 bed female dorm but upon arrival was checked into a 3 bed? I was only here for 3 nights so did not bother to mention it. However the room was dirty, there were empty crisp packets on the floor and stains on the mattresses and duvets. The kitchen is very small for such a large hostel and the ‘events’ on each night were pretty much all cancelled. The location is great and right by public transport but I would not stay here again nor would I recommend it.

Filled with some of the most obnoxious, dirty, and selfish backpackers I’ve met. Half of the people here were long termers (some apparently for over a year) on working visas. They would roam around in their gangs complaining about ‘new blood’ in the hostel, or rant in detail about their sexual activities — that is, if they weren’t performing them in the bunk bed below you. Larger rooms are very loud, covered in longtermers belonging. Not recommended for people over 30. Staff friendly and helpful.

A bit confused about how this hostel is rated > 8. The staff are nice and the location is fairly good but that’s where the good ends. Having to make up our own beds wasn’t great, broken lockers in the prison cell like rooms and a general old and stale vibe was the impression I got of the place. We cut our stay short, wouldn’t recommend it.

It's like the all female doors are cleaned on a bi-monthly bases or something. It was disgusting. Also wash the comforters every once in awhile. I thought booking an all female dorm would be safer or more comfortable. If you stay here don't stay in all female dorm book one of the other ones with hard floors that are actually cleaned every once in awhile.

The Nunnery says

I think what makes us extra special is the extras we offer our guests. We've got free breakfast every morning plus free events all week like movie night on Tuesdays, homemade soup on Wednesdays, pub crawls on Thursdays and wine and nibbles or BBQ on Fridays.
We really aim to offer a unique experience; after all, our hostel was built in 1888 and for 60 years used to be an actual nunnery! We take pride in helping our guests enjoy the very best Melbourne has to offer.
The nearest main attractions are the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Exhibition centre; personally, I recommend guests check out the bars, cafes and restaurants around nearby Brunswick Street and Smith Street. Jacqui, Assistant Manager
