Property Description

Overview
The Nunnery serves up the freshness of modern-day Melbourne with a side helping of 19th-century charm. What's the name about, you ask? Well, our Georgian building was built in 1888 and was an actual nunnery for 60 years. Now we're a small, unique, friendly hostel in the heart of Fitzroy. The Nuns (our staff) are all local Melbournians who can direct you to their favourite hotspots in town and help you with any questions about the hostel.

Location
Fitzroy is Melbourne's hipster hub, which means you only need to pop around the corner to find plenty of bars and shops. It'll take you 2 minutes to walk to Brunswick Street, and Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens are just across the road. We're on the main tram route, 96, but you can walk into the city centre in just over 10 minutes. It's easy to reach Melbourne Airport, you can book a Starbus for $22 and be dropped right outside our door.

Rooms and Dorms
Whatever your budget, we've got mixed, female-only dorms and private rooms to suit. Rooms described as “superior” are located next door in our Guesthouse. This building is semi attached to our main building and has its own shared facilities, for those wanting a little more privacy.

Extras and activities
We now offer new improved Free WIFI. Free bike hire! if that's your thing just head to the reception desk and pay a refundable security deposit. We also have hair dryers, straighteners, myki cards and sporting equipment to rent… just leave some ID.

We also put on free social events most days – our events can include movie nights, BBQs, family dinner nights and free breakfast every morning.
There are even pancakes on Sundays.

Facilities
Staying in? Cook up a treat in our fully equipped kitchen, or swing by our lounge, balcony or courtyard areas to chill/socialise with other travellers. We also have 24-hour free baggage storage and coin operated Laundry services at your convenience.

Late Check in?...
Don’t panic our Reception is open 8:00am – 1:00am with Mother Superior available outside these hours to let you in. View House Rules

I stayed at The Nunnery for two nights and wish I could’ve extended but it was fully booked! Really enjoyed my stay! It felt more like a home than a hostel. People were very relaxed and nice. Chill out area was so nice and kitchen was great. There was free maps and tips on different things to do in Melbourne as well as if the kitchen was closed at night there was a separate place to make tea/coffee and store your food. One of the best hostels in Melbourne! Highly recommend staying there 🕺🏼🌈

It was perfect! Good friendly atmosphere. I was afraid to come across drunk and noisy people in their early 20's but it wasn't the case. Relaxed atmosphere. Easy to make new friends. Almost everything you want to do is just a short walk around! The staff was helpful and welcoming. I've met several persons who loved this Hostel so much that they didn't want to leave!

Absolutely loved the nunnery! Was originally only supposed to stay 7 nights, ended up there 15 nights. The staff are so incredibly lovely, there’s enough procedure and structure in place for everyone to be comfortable but not overly strict. Lovely and relaxed environment, awesome theme, beautiful people, and lovely scenery (plants everywhere, my heaven!) It’s close to everything, with a tram station outside the front door, Brunswick st a short walk down the road. Everything very clean and homey

Excellent stay there. The hostel is a bit on the quieter side, with many working people or simply looking for a job. People are respectful but still possible to have fun especially during the weekends. Loved the stay here.

    Good

    22 Jan 2020
The staff was really friendly, the free breakfast nice and the room spacious. Unfortunately the hostel wasn't very clean. It felt very crowded (no place to sit at the breakfast or other commune areas). Also, there were a lot of older people living here. That shouldnt be a problem. Unfortunately there was a 70/80 year old woman in my dorm (4 bed female dorm) that was staying there for 4 months already and tried to claim the whole room; if you touch anything she would start a fight with you.

    Good

The hostel itself is nice. The kitchen facilities are good but is very small and cramped. Free breakfast which is a plus and some evening events you should get involved in. Our room was awful however, it was a mess and people basically were living there so we felt quite intrusive and the room was dark and dingy. Having said this we were in the 12 man so we wouldn’t advise this as the smaller rooms looked better.

The Nunnery says

I think what makes us extra special is the extras we offer our guests. We've got free breakfast every morning plus free events all week like movie night on Tuesdays, homemade soup on Wednesdays, pub crawls on Thursdays and wine and nibbles or BBQ on Fridays.
We really aim to offer a unique experience; after all, our hostel was built in 1888 and for 60 years used to be an actual nunnery! We take pride in helping our guests enjoy the very best Melbourne has to offer.
The nearest main attractions are the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Exhibition centre; personally, I recommend guests check out the bars, cafes and restaurants around nearby Brunswick Street and Smith Street. Jacqui, Assistant Manager
