Property Description

Overview
The Nunnery serves up the freshness of modern-day Melbourne with a side helping of 19th-century charm. What's the name about, you ask? Well, our Georgian building was built in 1888 and was an actual nunnery for 60 years. Now we're a small, unique, friendly hostel in the heart of Fitzroy. The Nuns (our staff) are all local Melbournians who can direct you to their favourite hotspots in town and help you with any questions about the hostel.

Location
Fitzroy is Melbourne's hipster hub, which means you only need to pop around the corner to find plenty of bars and shops. It'll take you 2 minutes to walk to Brunswick Street, and Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens are just across the road. We're on the main tram route, 96, but you can walk into the city centre in just over 10 minutes. It's easy to reach Melbourne Airport, you can book a Starbus for $22 and be dropped right outside our door.

Rooms and Dorms
Whatever your budget, we've got mixed, female-only dorms and private rooms to suit. Rooms described as “superior” are located next door in our Guesthouse. This building is semi attached to our main building and has its own shared facilities, for those wanting a little more privacy.

Extras and activities
We now offer new improved Free WIFI. Free bike hire! if that's your thing just head to the reception desk and pay a refundable security deposit. We also have hair dryers, straighteners, myki cards and sporting equipment to rent… just leave some ID.

We also put on free social events most days – our events can include movie nights, BBQs, family dinner nights and free breakfast every morning.
There are even pancakes on Sundays.

Facilities
Staying in? Cook up a treat in our fully equipped kitchen, or swing by our lounge, balcony or courtyard areas to chill/socialise with other travellers. We also have 24-hour free baggage storage and coin operated Laundry services at your convenience.

Great place to stay when visiting Fitzroy, or Melbourne generally. Situated just across the street from the Melbourne Museum and an arms length from the tram line into the city. Met some great people from all over and had a drink. Staff and people staying are very well-mannered and respect privacy. I definitely would come back again.

The Nunnery is simply divine! It's comfortable and friendly. I love the historic buildings and the common spaces: lounge, kitchen and I especially enjoyed the courtyard. The staff were great. The location not as central as I like, but it is only 10-15 minutes from the city centre by tram or a pleasant walk through Carlton Gardens. My only complaints were the mess of the dorm and the noise of residents who went to bed in the early hours of the morning. But it was a weekend & I am getting old!

Great hostel really, just bit on the pricey side. Good size and vibe. Staff helpful. Bunks a bit squeaky, but rooms and bathrooms big. Kitchen isn’t huge so can be busy. But otherwise really good stay. Plenty of places to sit, socialise or hangout. Close to a tram stop and walking distance to cool neighbourhoods.

The nunnery has a homely feel and the nun theme amusingly runs through the hostel. I got upgraded to a bed dorm which was good. The bathrooms are very dated and could do with a revamp. Free breakfast is a nice touch. Amazing location just a few minutes from Fitzroy high street and the tram stop.

I was put in the guesthouse next door so my review is based on that! Mixed feelings overall - great location in amazing Fitzroy and the communal areas felt more homely than next door, but overall the atmosphere felt quite exclusive/intimidating. Waiting up to half an hour to use 1 of the 3 bathrooms was also a daily issue - in a house that I’m guessing sleeps up to 40 or 50 people, having separate toilets and showers would make such a huge difference! Luckily I didn’t have work to get to!

Showers were big let down. Barely running water, and either freezing or boiling hot. Atmosphere was great though. BBQ and pancakes especially good.

First hostel experience. The staff is amazing. The hostel's theme is very cute. Overall the place is very unsanitary I recommend cleaning services throughout the day beds should already be made and updated amenities. Bathrooms were disgusting.

I stayed In the guest house. Let's say the photos don't look like the actual rooms. The place is run down really requires a total renovation and I won't stay there again. When I arrived the sheets I was given had stains on them and weren't really that clean. I am not sure if they even clean the rooms properly because I notice the wooden floors had lots of dirt stuck to them. I also found mould covered take away containers underneath my bed. I noted that the bathroom were cleaner than the dorms.

The Nunnery says

I think what makes us extra special is the extras we offer our guests. We've got free breakfast every morning plus free events all week like movie night on Tuesdays, homemade soup on Wednesdays, pub crawls on Thursdays and wine and nibbles or BBQ on Fridays.
We really aim to offer a unique experience; after all, our hostel was built in 1888 and for 60 years used to be an actual nunnery! We take pride in helping our guests enjoy the very best Melbourne has to offer.
The nearest main attractions are the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Exhibition centre; personally, I recommend guests check out the bars, cafes and restaurants around nearby Brunswick Street and Smith Street. Jacqui, Assistant Manager
