Property Description

As 'The Original' Hostel in Sydney, we pride ourselves on our great reputation, friendly staff and warm social atmosphere. Recommended by Lonely Planet, Let's Go and Rough Guide.

The Original Backpackers got converted into backpacker accommodation in 1980. At that time, there were Youth Hostels, but the term 'backpackers' was introduced by the original owners of the Original Backpackers. We reckon that makes us the very first backpackers in the world.

The Original Backpackers is situated in the vibrant food and entertainment precinct of Kings Cross and Potts point in a beautiful and well maintained heritage building. You can't miss the Victorian Terrace we care for so much. Earlier in its years Kings Cross used to be the well known red light district of Sydney but this all changed and is now packed with great cafes, restaurants of all kind and bars just around the corner, it certainly is still famous for its beautiful views and 30 minute walk to the Opera House through the Royal Botanical Gardens.

We have a big courtyard with a friendly and social atmosphere, a spacious, modern kitchen with two industrial stoves and ovens and a huge Lounge Room with a 50" TV where you can either catch up on the latest football games with FOX SPORTS or stream your favorite shows via NETFLIX. A coin operated Laundry, just for our guests, is provided as well.
We offer fast and free wifi connection (500mb per day) which is essential for every traveler. The coverage is throughout the whole hostel which makes surfing in your bed easy.

The Private Rooms, all with Private Bathrooms, fridges, TVs, fan/heaters and free tea and coffee are located in a modern wing, Double Rooms, Twin Rooms or Single Rooms, which ever will suit you best.

Dorms range from 4 Bed to 10 Bed, all have lockers, fans/heaters and fridges. You can book private dorms so you and your friends have their own room.

Shared dorms have an age restriction of- guests must be between the age of 18 and 40 years.

If you are travelling with a car we can offer a special deal with our local car park: $25 for hours! Great for Sydney prices. And if you are using public transport we are just located 150 meter down the road from the Kings Cross train Station.

IMPORTANT
Over the Christmas and New Year period there will be a 10 night minimum night stay for dormitory rooms, from 23rd December to 2nd January. There will be non refundable deposit of 50% charged on 1st December.
If we have beds left after the 23rd December we have a 3 night minimum stay from the 30th December. Full non-refundable payment is required. View House Rules

Amazing staff, amazing atmosphere, amazing guests. Just amazing! I ended up extending my stay as I made such close friendships with other guests and just enjoyed the hostel so much! Definitely the best hostel I've ever been to!

Very good location, and the staff were very welcoming as soon as I arrived. Not one of the best hostels I've been to, but pretty decent value for money, all things considered.

Nobody washes their dishes. So if you don’t mind cleaning up peoples stuff before cooking it’s ok. The oven in Zing didn’t work at all in the 4 months I stayed here. The only reason I stayed so long is the people I made friends with in the hostel were great fun and lovely. The free bread at breakfast was MOULDY and out of date by a week or so on numerous occasions which was off putting. The reception check in service can be very slow by the older members of staff

I've stayed at a ton of hostels and this place was mediocre. The ensuite room was good value and staff tried hard to keep common areas quiet after hours, but nevertheless there was a lot of noise, mostly from the laundry, but also from doors being slammed, drunken shouting and arguing by the mostly French backpackers. The facilities were kept as clean as possible but the whole place feels scuffed up worn out, and needs some love. free breakfast is cornflakes and rice Krispies, a few jams, and t

We stayed for two nights in a 6 bed mixed dorm. The receptionist was friendly and there were common spaces for cooking and hanging out. Our room was very messy and people were clearly using the spare beds as storage when not in use. The beds were also very loud and squeaky. The bathrooms were limited but not too busy although they weren’t always clean. Their website lists parking available but when we asked about it the reception said there was free street parking nearby which there wasn’t.

People outside smoking weed and drinking all day everyday, nobody smiles, cockroaches climbing the walls, security was rubbish, ceiling fan sounds like a jet engine, only plus is the location if you want to go and drink with crackheads and people shooting up.

booked a private room.During the night somebody got into my room with a key.The lock was rustling and I was scared that there was someone going to come in and they did.Once they realised someone was there they walked out but this is a huge security risk especially if you are a female and alone?!I alerted reception to this and all they said was that they’d ‘change the locks’.A woman at reception tried telling me I’d had a hypnogogic dream and that it would’ve been too dark for me to see.

Don’t stay here. I’m australian so maybe I had higher standards idk. Guests would walk around with no pants on, can’t walk in the room everyone’s stuff is everywhere. There’s no where you can go that hasn’t already been claimed by others or just ruined by others filth. Parking is too far from the hostel, in the dodgiest area. Not a safe place. The second I got there, I booked a hotel for the next night and left early. I had to get drunk to be okay with sleeping in that bed in that room.
