Property Description

The Phoenix Hostel was established in 2008 and has been often described as the perfect place to discover Shanghai because of its amazing location. Our friendly and helpful reception staff will be happy to help you plan your day’s activities and organize tickets booking to local events and tours. When you’re done exploring for the day the Phoenix Bar located on the rooftop terrace is a great place to relax and unwind, especially on warm summer nights.

This friendly hostel provides great value hotel standard accommodation at hostel prices in an amazing location. To meet the requirements of our customers, we offer 50 rooms with different room types: comfortable double beds, bright single rooms and excellent dormitory rooms. Our rooms have black-out curtains to keep the dawn out and have double glazed windows to help you get a good sleep if you need one.

Our rooftop is a great place to relax after spending a day exploring Shanghai. A chilled-out space to meet new friends, read books from our free selection, play games or plan your next party.

We hope that our guests will make the most of their time in China - a country with an interesting and diverse culture. In this perspective we hold numerous activities that embrace the Chinese culture such as dumpling making class, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese table games and many more.

The hostel is situated on south Yunnan road, also known as the Yunnan food street because of its amazing selection of restaurants. Very close to People's Square metro station (a 5-minute walk), it is the perfect starting point for sightseeing, shopping, people gazing, exploring and getting to the far corners of this huge city.

Yuyuan (Jade garden), city God temple, White Cloud Taoist temple and the old town Huaihai road, Xintiandi and Dongtai road antique market are close by.

There is still so many information to share about our hostel, but it would take ages and end up in writing a book or making a film to explain the whole experience, so don't hesitate anymore and come to meet us. Let's create wonderful memories together :)

Get the night started with drinks from the on-site bar and show off your table-tennis skills. There’s free Wi-Fi so you can brighten up your Insta with shots of the skyline, and our cheery staff are here 24/7 to help you find the good tours. After a little luxury? Location

We can take the hassle out of coming and going with our Pudong airport shuttle. It takes about 30 minutes; just let us know in advance that you want to book. From Shanghai railway station, we're 3 stops on metro line 1. There's a lot to see in Shanghai, so start by filling up on some tasty local bites like steamed dumplings: it's easy, since we’re on Yunnan road, known for its authentic restaurants! Hop on the metro at Dashijie station (a 4-minute walk) to head to The Bund by the river, the Shanghai Museum and the Yuyuan Garden. To see the city like a local, grab a rented bike!

Rooms and Dorms

Ladies, you can choose a female-only dorm if you like, and lads, there are male-only dorms too! We've also got double and single hotel-style rooms. When you’ve checked in, jump in our elevator with your backpack. Your gear can be safely stowed in one of our lockers and you'll get free linen and a reading light by your bed. Black-out curtains and double glazing are there to help you sleep soundly.

Extras and activities

If you don't know your nǐ hǎo from your xièxiè (that's hello and thank you), our Mandarin language classes will help. We also teach Chinese brush painting for artsy types. Fancy a discount on your room rate? Bring us some of your unwanted books for money off your bunk. Come lunchtime, you can indulge in traditional (and budget-friendly) meals at our ground-floor restaurant.

The Phoenix was a great place to stay. Interesting dorm rooms with some being bunk beds, and others being twin share. Each had their own ensuite which was nice. All facilities clean and tidy. The hostel has a great restaurant attached. Staff were very friendly and helpful when trying to call a few local businesses.

I can't recommend this hostel enough. This hostel was SO easy to find, and I'm a directionally challenged person. Their customer service is the best, and I felt warmth and welcome-ness. They will ask if you need help before you even need to open your mouth. I never really got her name, Sanglu? Shanghai was a teary struggle for me but she was a source of comfort, seriously. I cannot thank her enough for all of her help. I wish I was there longer! They have so many activities for guests!

This hostel is very nice, and the staff and patrons are super friendly. I made several friends here and I would love to visit again. The rooftop bar has a good vibe to it, though it's a bit overpriced. I think my only complaint was the size of the facilities, as my room felt far too narrow to fit four people (I barely had enough space to open my suitcase), the bathroom stalls were too narrow (my knees hit the door when I was using the toilet) and the showers were a little too narrow for me.

Really nice hostel, staff are so nice and helpful and speak really good English. There’s a restaurant next door where you can get the buffet breakfast for 28RMB, and a rooftop bar which is cool. The rooms are big and you get a big locker with a key card. Great location, 10 minute walk to the Bund. It was quiet but that’s not the hostels fault, the whole of Shanghai was quiet due to the virus. Apart from that it was great, I’ll definitely stay here again!

The location was hard to find not going to lie especially with no data plan, but the staff was very friendly and very helpful, you can buy breakfast every morning for 28 yen and it's all you can eat. The room is is not very spacious but the beds are, they have a bar on the roof which is okay the drinks are overpriced but I imagine it is a cool atmosphere when people are there, I was one of five people at this hostel when the coronavirus was going on. Overall good hostel

The hostel has the best location, right next to the subway and People's Square, 25 min away from the Bund (walking). We had a private double room and it was fine. Also if you pay cash for your staying, you get an amazing breakfast for free!
