Property Description

The Treehouse is a small friendly hostel hidden away in the tiny village of Grünau. Sitting in the middle of the Totes Gebirge (the dead mountains) the area around the hostel provides an ideal environment for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, swimming, or just relaxing.

The secluded location ensures a good nights rest, unless you choose to join the fun in the downstairs bar, where guests and locals mingle together to chat or have a game of pool or table soccer. There are mountain bikes for hire for those who want to explore the surrounding area. There is even a tennis and basket ball court that is free to use and in winter time the ski-lifts are only 200m away. We'll supply the ski clothing free of charge.

The largest room in our hostel has only 6 beds and each room has its own private shower and toilet. And best of all, a BREAKFAST BUFFET IS INCLUDED in the room price!

The Treehouse is easy to get to. Just an hour train ride off the main line between Salzburg and Vienna. So if you're tired of the big cities get off the beaten track and come and experience some of the real Austria. View House Rules

My stay here was amazing. Perfect spot to get out of the city for a while. Gerhard was a legend and his cooking was amazing. I was there beginning of November and it was insanely quiet, only 3 people staying. Meant I got to know the other two staying there really well. Gerhard is very accommodating and makes you feel right at home. He even came for a walk to the waterfall with me so I wasn’t alone. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get away from the business of European travel.

Wonderful place to stay! The landscape here is beautiful, with a ton of great hikes and an alpine lake. We really enjoyed the slowed down pace, as well as Gerhard's hospitality and good cooking. Highly recommend a stay here.

This hostel is truly amazing and I would recommend it to anyone. For starters, the location is magical and there’s so many beautiful things to explore like Lake Almsee and some nearby waterfalls. The hostel itself is homey and comfortable and was a nice break from typical hostels. The owner, Gerhard, is a former chef and cooks amazing €10 three course family dinners every night as well as the most incredible €6 lasagne for lunch every second day. Definitely stay here if you’re heading to Grunau!

Amazing host, great hostel with everything you need. The location of the hostel is near the mountains, so the views are absolutely beautiful and there is lots of nature to see. The only issue is that the hostel is quite far from the Vienna airport so it can be costly to get there. If you want to see the nature side of Austria, I would strongly recommend staying at this hostel and booking a train ticket far in advance to avoid high priced train tickets. An alternative would be to rent a car.

Get out of the city and go visit the mountains. Perfect retreat away from the buzz of the cities. Dinner for 10euro is gourmet, but if you've been hiking all day bring extra food! Breakfast is a great start, best paired with a cold dip in the spring in the back. It was down season when I went so there was complete isolation but the place looks ready for a lively winter crowd.

I had a wonderful stay here. It is the perfect place to go if you just want a few days surrounded by nature. The scenery is just beautiful. The staff at this hostel are so friendly and make you feel so welcome, it was just like being at home. The home cooked meals were incredible, I can definitely recommend them. The only improvements I could suggest would be to provide soap in the bathrooms in the dorms, and also for guests to feel welcome to use even just basic kitchen facilities.
