Overview

Welcome to our little slice of Mexican paradise at the Yak Lake House in Bacalar. You’ll find us right on a peaceful lagoon – ideal for a little bit of much-needed serenity! Wake to views of the water, and head onto the outdoor terrace to watch the sunrise. Fill up on a free breakfast (we’re talking fresh fruit, cereal and, of course, coffee). Take daily strolls on our private dock, which stretches into the lagoon, or hop on a boat trip to Pirate Cove. When you get back, get chatting over cheap drinks in the bar, or get comfy with a book in the common room.

Location

You may not want to leave our dreamy little haven, but if you do, there’s plenty to see. We’re three minutes’ walk from St Felipe Fort Museum, and even closer to buzzing bars and restaurants (taco and tequila, anyone?). If you fancy exploring Bacalar, we’re just 15 minutes from ADO bus station. When it’s time to go, just hop in a taxi or bus for 35 minutes to get to Chetumal airport.

Rooms and Dorms

When it comes to rooms, take your pick: there are spacious privates for couples and dorms if you fancy meeting new people. All rooms have private bathrooms as well as air con to keep you cool. Your linen's included, and you can keep your bags safe in a handy locker.

Extras and activities

Need to check in with home? Just jump on the free Wi-Fi (warning: Bacalar's views might cause serious envy). If you’re heading out tonight, don’t worry about cutting the fun short – there’s no curfew, and a 24-hour reception. Or, you can just take it easy, and try your hand at a board game with a buddy. Popcorn cooked up in our microwave may just make you the most popular person in your dorm.

Book this place. Then book an extra night as you won’t want to leave. Waking up to that view is heaven.

I loved everything about Yak Lodge and it sat directly on the lagoon. The staff were helpful, efficient, and friendly. The room was basic but well put together. I had a beautiful view of the lagoon. The hostel offers sheets as well as blankets for those that get cold. A/C is on from 8pm-11am which I thought was great time span. They offer rented kayaks and paddleboards, bar in the back of hostel which faces the lagoon & activities scheduled everyday. The free bkfast was great! Very clean!

A beautiful hostel, and the best one to stay at in Bacalar. Right on the lake, free kayak hire from 8am-1pm which was the best otherwise it would’ve been too expensive for us to even go out. Great margaritas! Pretty chill vibe but that’s what we wanted. Fantastic breakfast and very friendly staff.

    - If sleeping in and cleaning crew come in, they will have a normal conversation (not whisper), despite being able to see that you are sleeping. - Otherwise, friendly staff, especially bar staff. - Dish washing sink does not have hot/warm water. - Only one toilet outside of dorm (and only one bathroom/toilet in 8 people dorm). - Lockers have a 4-digit PIN, easy to change on each use. Staff have master key if you forget PIN. - Dorm door does not auto lock. - Nice small light & plug by each bed.

Overall nice hostel. The price is a bit high though. However, compared to another hostel I stayed in Bacalar, the Yak Lake was definitely cleaner and had nicer facilities and beds.

Very nice hostel, the showers and toilets could be cleaner, other than that it's perfect and in my opinion the best place to stay in Bacalar

    Very Good

Nice hostel although a little bit expensive for not great facilities. Plug kept falling out of socket so difficult to charge phone and the ceiling was very low on top bunk so I banged my head on a wooden beam, which is a health and safety issue. Activities were really great and the hostel has a nice vibe and great location in Bacalar. Probably the best hostel to stay in Bacalar for the time being!

    Good

Quite a nice place, very busy with international travellers. Loud music till 1 am on my second night from the restaurant next door. Nice beds and big lockers, a light and plug for every bed. Good hot water. Breakfast was pretty lame with good fruit and OJ and terrible bread and sweetened cold cereal - no hot food. A/C was excellent - from 7 pm to 11 am, much longer than other hostels I've been in. Too bad the price is double the going rate there.

We stayed here because of the perceived best location on the lake. However you cant enter the lake from the deck and the hostel pier is for boats. Other better locations to spend time by the lake than here. They are renovating the deck so half of it was unusable. There was no advance notification, discount or apology. WiFi not working. No apology or notice. The hostel is between 2 clubs. The hostel was shaking from the bass next door til 3am on 1 night. No apology. Overall v bad experience.
