Overview

Welcome to our little slice of Mexican paradise at the Yak Lake House in Bacalar. You’ll find us right on a peaceful lagoon – ideal for a little bit of much-needed serenity! Wake to views of the water, and head onto the outdoor terrace to watch the sunrise. Fill up on a free breakfast (we’re talking fresh fruit, cereal and, of course, coffee). Take daily strolls on our private dock, which stretches into the lagoon, or hop on a boat trip to Pirate Cove. When you get back, get chatting over cheap drinks in the bar, or get comfy with a book in the common room.

Location

You may not want to leave our dreamy little haven, but if you do, there’s plenty to see. We’re three minutes’ walk from St Felipe Fort Museum, and even closer to buzzing bars and restaurants (taco and tequila, anyone?). If you fancy exploring Bacalar, we’re just 15 minutes from ADO bus station. When it’s time to go, just hop in a taxi or bus for 35 minutes to get to Chetumal airport.

Rooms and Dorms

When it comes to rooms, take your pick: there are spacious privates for couples and dorms if you fancy meeting new people. All rooms have private bathrooms as well as air con to keep you cool. Your linen's included, and you can keep your bags safe in a handy locker.

Extras and activities

Need to check in with home? Just jump on the free Wi-Fi (warning: Bacalar's views might cause serious envy). If you’re heading out tonight, don’t worry about cutting the fun short – there’s no curfew, and a 24-hour reception. Or, you can just take it easy, and try your hand at a board game with a buddy. Popcorn cooked up in our microwave may just make you the most popular person in your dorm.

Unbelievable! Without a doubt the best hostel I’ve stayed at in my life. If I’m being honest it’s a standard sort of hostel itself but waking up every morning, opening the door and seeing that view across the lagoon is just priceless. Truly stunning. Well worth a few extra quid to be on the lake so enjoy the seats out on the “beach” all day.

One of our favourite hostels that we’ve stayed in in Mexico!! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and lots of activities you can do from the hostel which are good value - definitely recommend the sunrise paddle board tour!! Perfect hostel to chill all day and then good vibes a night but doesn’t go on too late so can sleep early if you want to!!

I stayed in room 1 … even with the use of ear plugs, it’s impossible to fall asleep before 4 AM with the bar next door (on a Saturday, at least). The music is aggressively loud and the bass makes the wall vibrate. The girls who work the front desk are fantastic … the dude, Mario, I think his name is, could use some extra training in the area of hospitality.

Only bad thing is the non-stop music from the bar outside. Some quiet hours in the morning and mid-day would have been nice. Overall amazing place by the lake, fun and cheap activities. Guidance by passionate staff. Recommend dorms for the atmosphere.

I had a really great time in this hostel! The people I met were all chill and from all over the world. The staff except for one guy at the reception was really nice and helpful. The place was incredibly clean and the bathroom was really great for a hostel. Everything seemed in good shape and a big plus was the WiFi which only broke down once for a few hours and worked amazingly well the rest if the time. If I ever come back - I will definitely stay there again.

About a 1km walk from the Ado bus station down one road, so super easy to reach without getting lost. It was amazing to open the hostel sliding door (made of glass so you can look outside) to step out onto the patio with the lake right in front of you. The convenience of this is what makes this a great place to stay to enjoy the lagoon. We booked the sunset kayak with the hostel and this was amazing. We also recommend the sunrise paddle tour - an absolute must in Bacalar! It was our first time!

Beautiful location and good activities. Activities were well priced and a good way to meet people. Others complained about a bar next door which was quite loud but it didn't bother me from my room. Good atmosphere in the afternoon with lots of good seats and a bar by the lake.

Standard hostel with over standard price. Not many possibilities to connect with other people due to the arrangement of the public areas
