Property Description

“There are no strangers here, only friends we haven’t met.” That’s the vibe you can expect when entering the perfectly shaded, outdoor courtyard at The Yak.

With a combination of the best location, great accommodations, a friendly staff, and lots of awesome things to do—you can’t miss out on The Yak.

Located right in the center of Playa, The Yak is close to everything: 5th Avenue (known for its restaurants and shops), grocery stores like Wal-Mart, 12th Street with all of the bars and nightclubs, and, of course, the beach—but many people pass the day in the hostel lying in the hammocks or chilling on the rooftop terrace.

In The Yak’s courtyard, you will find a 24-hour reception with lots of staff members who are always available to answer your questions, a cool bar with cheap prices, and a café where you can order tartas and delicious empanadas.

The Yak was created for travelers, by travelers—so it’s more than just a place to sleep, we try to keep it fun! We have different activities everyday including, tours to Cenotes, our famous Mojito Lesson, every night we have our amazing chef making different delicious dishes and many more! For those looking to explore the Mayan ruins, we can reserve additional excursions.

The Yak has two communal kitchens, bright/airy dorms, and private rooms with kitchenettes, so there is an option to suit every budget. Many people plan to stay for a few days and end up staying for weeks.

You're guaranteed to leave The Yak with new friends and fond memories, so come be a part of The Yak Family! View House Rules

At The Yak, we live by the philosophy that strangers are friends we haven’t met yet. When you join our tribe, we welcome you with open arms – as well as a ton of freebies (Wi-Fi and breakfast, to name a couple). Sway in a hammock, sunbathe on the rooftop terrace or get sociable at one of our free movie nights or Mojito making sessions. We love it when you come for a chat in the bar – where we keep the drinks cheap and the vibes relaxed – or spend a lazy hour or two at our café. Up for exploring the area's Mayan ruins or cenotes? We can book you a tour.

We’re central to the action of Playa del Carmen, just 5 minutes from the beach and surrounded by the shopping arcades, restaurants and bars our resort is famous for. Start your night in the bars of the shore-side strip before moving on to the iconic Coco Bongos nightclub – just 130 metres from our front door. If you’re arriving at Cancun International Airport, we’re a 45-minute shuttle ride away – there are plenty of local operators. Coming in by bus? The main ADO station is a 10-minute walk away.

Rooms and Dorms

All rooms are en-suite and have air con. Free linen is included in your stay and you can keep your backpack out of the way in your locker – remember your own padlock. Stay in a friendly mixed dorm, or if you're coming with friends, you can check into a private double, triple or quad room.

Extras and activities

Need a break from tacos? Make a home-cooked meal in one of our two shared kitchens, or head up the barbecue area for dinner on the terrace. We have laundry facilities, so you can refresh the contents of your backpack. While you wait, watch some TV in the lounge or get some tips from the staff at our 24-hour reception. For a beach read, see what's new at our book exchange.

very centrally located in a side street close to main avenue (with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants etc) and short walking distance to beach & dive shops. Uber-friendly staff. Terrific backyard with hammocks, bar, communal activities. Somehow, the one bathroom for a 12 beds dorm magically worked out. Rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy at night.

Had a nice stay at the Yak. The staff were nice, met some nice people, and really enjoyed the chill vibe. Not my favorite place in PdC, but I did recommend it to others while I was down there. Beds were a little stiff, but everything was clean and nice. Good water pressure, great food, and great happy hour at the bar. It's a fun place if you want to be near the 5th Ave fun, but don't want to bring it home every night. Courtyard was really cool to hang out in.

Solid hostel. Great communal spaces and social events, its easy to meet others at the Yak! Beds are fairly creaky & rickety, can be a bit annoying for you and others in the dorm. Would stay again

The staff did an amazing job on New year's, we had a great time. The breakfast was nice and great that it's included. We stayed in the 12 bed dorm and don't understand how it can only be one bathroom for 12 people. A lot of waiting and unnecessary frustrating.

Happy that I survived this place and didn't die of boredom. The pictures of activities are surely misleading since all events are all about the staff, their friends and volunteers. There was live music & market when I stayed which failed to get any visitors despite they advertising it outside. The bunk beds are these old wooden frames and towels & linen is overused. I stayed on ground floor & the door always remained open. AC stays at 27-28 C in the night when outside temperature is 24 lol
