Very nice people, easy location. The only thing I didn't sleep because 2 very rude girls kept the entire building awake until 5 am acting like if they paid for everyone's bed. That's has nothing to do with the owners they are the nicest and sweetest people that I met on my trip and because of that I gave them a 10.

Amazing hostel. Staff is excellent. They provide you a 24 pages documents of things to visit, hikes, food recommendation/location. It really helped me! Also, I strongly recommend the Spyros tour. The guy is really entertaining. Only down side to this hostel is that the common area closes at 12h.

We stayed here for one night and it was amazing! The location was great, and it’s easy to reach from the train station. The staff was so friendly and everything was clean. The very best thing was the atmosphere:) The hostel has a very comfy and relaxed vibe, and you can meet so many cool people in the common area and kitchen. This hostel is the perfect place to stay to discover Genoa!

Stayed here for one night because we were flying out in the next morning. Overall a good, clean experience. Nice bathrooms and soft beds. Not the best location if you want to be in the historical center of the city, but absolutely perfect if you need Genova Brignole. The communal breakfast in the morning was a nice idea but a little anxiety-inducing after seeing someone get tested for Covid right afterwards. Overall a nice hostel, and the building it’s in is gorgeous!

    Very Good

It was quite a basic hostel but it had everything they had advertised and suited our needs really well. The only thing that was a bit of a problem was the security as we found the main door to the building and the door to the hostel were often unlocked. The smell of smoke was also really strong throughout the hostel due to the balcony being a smoking area. It was great to be offered breakfast though.

My friend and I had been backpacking for one month prior to our stay at Victoria House and had been staying at hostels the entire time. Our stay here has been one of the most interesting experiences to say the least. We chose this hostel because the reviews were promising. We’re pretty laidback people and don’t expect much from the places we stay, especially hostels. The check in process was easy and the woman checking us in was super sweet. She explained to us the amenities and gave us a tour of the place. Right away, we noticed the lack of security and how hot the rooms were. Every door in the place, from the front entrance of the building to the room doors, were unlocked. Anybody can walk into the hostel and enter any room that they please. There were locks on the room doors but no one locked the doors. We locked it on our first night but it was immediately unlocked by our roommates. This made us a little uneasy because we’re both young female travellers. They did lock the entrance doors at night but reception was in a separate area so there was no one monitoring who was coming in and out of the hostel. We had an older gentleman staying in our room the second night who instantly gave us weird vibes. He was chatting us up and making my friend and I extremely uncomfortable. We didn’t think much of it, we just attributed it to cultural differences as he was Italian and spoke no english. The next day we brought it up to management and were told that he was no longer staying at the hostel because he got weird vibes from the man and didn’t want him around. My friend and I were relieved. This is where the lack of security became a big issue with us. The next night, my friend and I were hanging out in our room and the same old man comes walking in. We were both in disbelief and felt extremely uncomfortable. Thankfully, there was someone else in the room with us. We knew he wasn’t staying in our room because all the beds were taken and we were told that he had checked out. The man walks out and goes out into the common area. My friend and I were now alone the room and about 5 minutes later the old man walks back in. We immediately leave the room and go talk to reception because we were scared. The girls at reception were amazing and immediately came and kicked the guy out. They said he left his key earlier today so he must of snuck in with somebody. The lack of security at this hostel is not ideal for young female travellers. Luckily, nothing bad happened to us but it could of been a lot worse. The whole night we were on edge that this man was going to walk into our room in the middle of the night and do something to us or someone else. The lack of security wasn’t the only issue we had while being at this hostel. There was an extreme lack of communication about the policies and amenities. The woman checking us in was brand new so she didn’t fully explain the laundry process, all she said was that laundry is 5 euros. Up until this point, laundry had been self-service so we assumed it was the same process here. The washing machine was also in a common area and easily accessible to everyone so we assumed that we could just do it ourselves and then go down to reception to pay. We have a lot of delicate clothing so we’re always so cautious of what cycles we choose and we aren’t dumb, we know how to read a washing machine. So we put our clothes in and call it a day. The cycle is finally over so we go to take our clothes out but the worker is there doing it for us. We go up to him and tell him that those clothes are ours and he gives us this weird look, almost pissed of, which is when we clued in that we weren’t supposed to do it ourselves. He doesn’t say anything about the rules, he just says “okay, they’re still really wet, I’m just going to start the dryer cycle”. We say okay that’s fine and walk away. After about 15 minutes we get a little concerned because we have expensive clothes in there so we go and check on it. It says it’s going to be 3 hours which is just absurd and the dryer door is extremely hot to the touch. We freak out a little bit and ask the worker to stop the machine because we don’t want to ruin our clothes. We says okay and opens the door for us. Immediately, we knew that something was off. The clothes were steaming hot and felt as if someone threw boiling water over our clothes. We couldn’t even touch it. At this point we’re a little irritated because we had told the worker that we didn’t want our stuff dried and now it’s basically been sitting in boiling water for 15 minutes. We try not to freak out and just let it be. He then tells us that we need to bring it to reception and that it’ll be 8 euros. We bring up that we were told that it was 5 euros and he immediately tries to argue with us about it. We don’t want to cause a scene right in the common area so we just drop it and will just talk to reception. So we go down to reception and the same guy is there. He tells us that it’s fine we don’t need to pay 8 euros and that he’ll honour the 5 euros. We explain the situation and apologize for doing the laundry ourselves. He insists on hanging up our laundry for us which we weren’t necessarily comfortable with but we just go with it because it’s already been such a hassle. So we leave our clothes with him and go on with our day. The next morning I go down to grab our clothes. He’s passing me all our clothes and I immediately notice that there was colour bleed on half of our stuff and burn marks from the metal inside the dryer. I look at the manager and tell him that our stuff is ruined. He immediately tries to deflect blame and tells me that it’s all our fault. I explain to him the situation that happened yesterday and that it was dryer cycle that ruined the clothes not our cold water cycle. He tells me that the best he can do is refund us the 5 euro for the laundry service but nothing else because it was our fault. I’m extremely irritated at this point so I just grab our clothes and leave. I go back up to my friend and show her the state of our clothes. She decides that she wants to go talk to them herself because her clothes had the most damage. The conversation with the manager was extremely unprofessional and handled poorly. He was taking zero responsibility and refused to listen to our side. He just kept blaming us, telling us that we were wrong, and saying the he wouldn’t of done that if he was us. We had already taken responsibility for breaking the rules but he wasn’t doing the same. It was 20 minutes of back and forth yelling. 20 minutes of feeling like we were being talked down to. He wasn’t understanding our side of the story. We were trying to explain to him that it was the extreme heat that caused the damage not our cold water cycle. It eventually got to the point where I was over this conversation and it was going no where. We tell him that this was our worst hostel experience which caused him to immediately to switch. He then proceeds to beg for a positive review and that he’ll do whatever we want. I ask for compensation for the clothes that got ruined. He does end up giving us 60 euro which we appreciated, it wasn’t enough to cover the value of the clothing that was ruined but we were exhausted at this point and didn’t want to fight anymore. The conversation ended up with everyone being friends again but it felt like it was more out of fear of a bad review not because he cared. Overall, the confrontation with the manager felt extremely unprofessional and we felt disrespected. We acknowledge that we broke the rules initially but the way the situation was handled just rubbed us the wrong way. A complete lack of communication from the moment we checked in to a complete lack of customer service when we had an issue. I would expect a lot more professionalism from the owner/manager of a hostel. The hostel was good value, clean, and in a good location but our experience ruined it for us. I do recommend this hostel but beware of their policies and lack of security.
