Hostelworld says

Wake Up! Sydney voted 'Best Hostel in Australia' & '5 Best Extra-Large Hostel Worldwide' at the 2020 Hostelworld HOSCAR Awards and it's no wonder - this hostel is located just next to the Central Station, near Paddy's Market and Chinatown and a short walk from Darling Harbour. Travellers tell us they appreciate the hostel's 'very engaging community', with staff who 'are super friendly and go out of their way to accommodate you', hosting parties and events every day. We like their attention to little details, providing rare extras such as an on-site ATM as well as hooks and shelves in the showers.

Overview

Bright, buzzing and bang in the middle of town, at Wake Up! Sydney Central there's always something going on. You'll find us around the corner from Central Station. And if you're on a late flight, no worries: our reception is open 24 hours. Build up a sweat before a busy day with a fitness class, or flex those muscles with some yoga. Fresh Colombian coffee is on tap at our friendly café. When your feet are itching to get out and explore the Harbour City (it's what you came for, right?) grab some cash from our on-site ATM, pick up a free city map and head out.

Location

If you’re coming from the airport, the shuttle bus will bring you right to Central Railway Station, which is just a 3-minute walk away. We’re handily sandwiched between the cultural Ultimo and ultra-chic Surry Hills neighbourhoods, so you’ll be right in the heart of the action. Our highlights? Browsing the local produce at Paddy’s Market, slurping noodles in Chinatown or kicking back by the sea at Darling Harbour.

Rooms and Dorms

Our rooms are modern and airy. Choose between mixed and female-only dorms or private rooms with or without en suites. Reading lights mean you can stay up past everyone else's bedtime to plan your next move (without disturbing your bunkmates). We've taken care of the essentials here – bed linen is free and there are security lockers for you to safely stash your gear.

Extras and activities

Many friendships have been forged on our guided city walks. Back at the hostel, make our restaurant your first stop, then head to the Side Bar – famous for its parties (and don't miss the budget-friendly drinks). If you're after a quieter night, join us for wine and cheese tasting or try our trivia comp. Tight budget? Don’t miss the free pizza at our legendary student nights. Wi-Fi's free too, so you can check in with home (and gloat a little about what you’ve been up to).

Excellent accommodation and all I need is a bed for a bed for the night. Don't need anything fancy, just something inexpensive, clean and comfortable which Wakeup is. Has all the facilities a person needs for a short stay.

Perfect location next to the central station! The hostel was very clean and spacious, staff was lovely. Shout out to Max who helped me with my booking in the middle of the night - legend! I loved the dorm I stayed in (702) because the view over the city was pretty awesome. Cheers

Great atmosphere thanks mostly because of the staff and the "permanent" resident. Everyone was super friendly and the games at Side bar are worth checking out. The kitchen could use some improvements but overall really functional.

Heard a lot about this place while in Australia and had to see it for myself! Its massive and due to covid it was no where near capacity which was awesome because everyone in there was close and friendly! Having a bar with amazing backpacker deals downstairs was absolute class as well. The staff were amazing, helpful, friendly, and someone like myself.. a backpacker !! No complaints at all just a bit expensive for what it is but still worth it in other ways! I also booked two more weeks haha

I'd give it an 7/10.... Advantage -room is clean esp toilet -just across Central Station and bus stop -you can store your luggage safely even after checkout -very close to everything , you can just walk if you want and if you have your walking shoes 😊 Disadvantage -Ensuite room we rented is suitable for 1 person only, it was too small. -no fridge and kettle inside the room, so we ended up kept going downstair and somewhere to have coffee and eat. -blinds is old, the sunlight is very annoying

Overall good hostel with a very central location. It has a nice kitchen with most things that you need but is a classic big hostel with a below average atmosphere, small communal spaces and lacks character.

Wake Up! Sydney Central says

I think what makes us different is that we offer an experience, not just a bed. We add value to your room rate by offering free daily activities, including a city orientation tour twice a week, a beach walk, football outings and more. On check-in you'll receive lots of vouchers with discounts, including a free beer in our bar and free coffee in the café. In fact, we've got everything all under one roof: whether you want to do your laundry, get online, watch TV in our common areas, connect to Wi-Fi, prepare your own food, withdraw cash, book a tour, have a beer, coffee or a cheap meal, Wake Up is fully equipped to serve you!
We offer easy access to all of Sydney's main attractions. I recommend taking the short bus ride to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, or over to Bondi Beach.
We cater mainly to 18-30-year-old travellers on a budget but all adults are welcome and we do cater for people with special needs or disabilities. Unfortunately, we don't have facilities suitable for children. Dev Penney, General Manager
