I have stayed in many hostels around Europe and I am happy to say that this was one of the best. Shared rooms had separate areas for lockers (lock uses room key), bathrooms and showers were private and clean, breakfast was great (and included for free), they provided a free bus pass for the whole stay, the hostel is walkable (about 15 minutes downhill from the train station), the hostel is right next to the beautiful Aare river, the staff spoke French, German, Italian, English, and I’m sure more

Loved this hostel. In a beautiful location just next to the river aare, good breakfast, comfortable beds, lockers that work using your key cards. Only thing to note is that to walk there from the station its quite downhill unless you pay for a railcart, but once you get there you get a free travel pass for your stay so you can get around easily. Lovely hostel!

    Very Good

Everything about this hostel is great except for the atmosphere. The staff, free breakfast buffet, and location were all fantastic but the atmosphere was awful. I thought since it was called Youth-hostel there would be a younger crowd but 90% of the guests there were in their 30s-40s and many even had kids with them. This may have been unusual for the hostel but that’s just my experience.

We loved our stay. The location of the hostel is amazing with views up to the Parliament building from one window and views of the river from the other. The lockers in the rooms were very secure and safe. We also loved the travel pass we were given for local transport which is easy to use in Bern. Our issues are there was only one microwave and kettle when preparing our own food, the lack of gluten free options and limited atmosphere for younger travelers. Evening meal prices were too expensive.

Buffet breakfast was good and the 8 bedroom I stayed in had lots of space. The shower/ bathroom setup is communal, with only one toilet on each floor allocated to girls and the rest is mixed. Be cautious if you choose to stay here - check your bed linen and mattress before you sleep. My bed had bed bugs and I’ve got over 20 bites on my back now. Told reception and they gave me a full refund and seemed apologetic, but I didn’t see them seal the room and move the other people to different rooms.

We found bed bugs in our mattress halfway through our stay, but because the hostel was fully booked we had to stay in the same beds again for another night. We were given half of one nights refund. There is no kitchen or laundry which is a shame, and only 4 toilets and 3 showers per floor (with about 15-20 dorms per floor, 100+ people) so you never get to shower on time in the morning. You do get a public transport pass on arrival though which is helpful. Not an awful place but not the best.
