Art Deco architecture, lively nightclubs and tropical beaches make Miami Beach one of the most iconic destinations in the USA. It's actually an island, connected to the American mainland and downtown Miami by bridge, and has been a popular hangout for celebrities since the early 20th century. Even today, you'll probably spot a few famous faces strolling around South Beach. Chilled out by day and buzzing by night, it's the ideal place to unwind.
At Miami Beach hostels, you can stay in one of the city's iconic 1930s Art Deco buildings or go modern and base yourself at a luxury stay with a rooftop swimming pool. You can get the evening's festivities started at hostels with on-site bars. Some hostels in Miami Beach offer free drinks and long daily happy hours, while others serve dinner, plus late-night snacks after the clubs close. Outdoor patios and terraces make a relaxed place to soak up the Florida sunshine. Look out for a Miami beach hostel with free parking if you're visiting as part of a USA road trip.
South Beach is where people go to party. High-end shops line Collins Avenue, while live music pours out of the beachfront bars all day and well into the night. The beach itself is studded with loungers so you can settle down for some sunbathing. Just to the north is Mid Beach, known for its pastel-hued Art Deco buildings where the famous '50s Rat Pack group used to hang out. North Beach is much quieter, with fewer clubs and a picturesque boardwalk.
When you're not lounging around on the long white-sand beaches or watching the sunset over happy hour cocktails in a rooftop bar, take some time to learn about the city's unique architecture at the Art Deco Museum. Its gift shop also sells cool vintage dresses and retro-inspired trinkets. Back on the water, you can hire a jet ski for the day and zip through the waves or simply snorkel in the clear sea. An airboat trip into the mangrove swamps of the Florida Everglades, home to wild alligators, is a fun break from the glitz and glamour.
Miami International Airport is the nearest hub for flights and is about 20km away. There's an express bus between the airport and Miami Beach and taxis are widely available too. Buses run up and down Collins Avenue, so it's easy to shuttle around. There are rideshare options in the city, which are especially handy for crossing the bridge into downtown, but you can also hire a bike or electric golf cart to get around.
