Patong Beach on Thailand's west coast is Phuket Island's original party destination, and is as bright and lively as ever. There's more here than just nightlife, however. The town is a paradise for shoppers, whether you're into high fashion or handmade crafts and the night markets are some of the best on the island. When you're ready for a swim, stroll to either end of the 2.5km beach to find a peaceful spot away from the bars.

Opt for a sleek monochrome interior or the intricate finish of traditional Thai woodwork. If you're interested in hanging out with your fellow travellers, you can stay in a hostel complete with a British pub. Another Patong Beach hostel runs island tours, beach trips and nightly games.

Soi Bangla, or Bangla Road, is the heart of town. At sunset the road closes to traffic and the bars, clubs and cabarets open for business. If you're eating out before hitting the bars, Beach Road is the go-to for restaurants, while the road heading out of town to Kamala is lined with surprisingly affordable eateries with sea views. Going either north or south out of Patong Beach, the party atmosphere calms down and you'll find secluded coves backing onto dense forest.

Jungceylon is Phuket Island's biggest shopping mall so if you're craving a day of retail therapy with air con then this is the place to go. Foodies should stop by Malin Plaza where the local street food vendors congregate and surfers can get their fix in the wave simulator of the town's surf bar. It's not hard to find solitude in Patong Beach either. Freedom Beach is just a 10-minute motorcycle ride south and if you arrive in the morning you could have the white sands to yourself. On the way back, stop at Patong View Point to snap the jungle-covered hills of Thailand's coast from above.

From Phuket International Airport you can catch the hourly bus or shared mini-bus to Patong Beach. Taxis and tuk-tuks are also an option, although prices rise steeply at night. If you're coming from Phuket Town a sŏrng·tăa·ou (pick-up truck) or minivan is the best option. To get around town or explore the beaches along the coast, either hire a motorcycle or flag down a tuk-tuk. If you're staying in the centre of town you can reach most areas by foot.
