Catch an ocean breeze in the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan. One of the oldest European settlements in Latin America, it's famous for colonial architecture as well as ancient forts and a magnificent cathedral. A vibrant culture that moves to the rhythms of salsa and local reggaeton is a huge draw for visitors. And as the city's set along the shores of the Atlantic, it's easy to get to the beach. Here you can unwind after a day exploring, before heading out to one of the many nightclubs.

Here, you’ll find fortresses like Castillo San Cristóbal that tell of Puerto Rico’s turbulent past. Or, you can go upmarket and check out Condado, an affluent neighbourhood where designer shops and luxe hotels mix. Isla Verde is the resort district and ideal if you want beaches and nightlife. On the edge of town is La Perla, an iconic shanty town famous for its music scene. 

Every Puerto Rican bucket list will include an eclectic mix of historic and modern cultural sites. Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a 16th-century fort with a viewpoint overlooking the bay. To see one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas, drop by San Juan Bautista. Spend relaxing days soaking up the sun at Condado or Pine Grove beaches. By night, authentic local experiences unfold down at La Factoria, a speakeasy in La Perla. 

To reach the city from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, you can take the AMA bus to Old San Juan or Isla Verde. A taxi will have you in the centre in around 20 minutes. Getting around the city is simple on local buses and a free trolley drops off at Old San Juan's must-see spots. To venture further afield, take the Tren Urbano.
