About

When you first walk through the wooden gate of the Hug Centre Hostel, your eyes may widen just a little. This is not an Instagram hostel and it shows through the variety of wood and building techniques utilized in its construction, the used appliances and the gently worn mismatched furniture. But once you learn that this hostel was built by volunteers as a project in sustainability, a labour of love so to speak, using recycled and donated materials, you start to understand and appreciate the special nature of these accommodations.

The Hostel is part of a larger vision, one that not only promotes careful and sustainable use of existing materials, but one that encourages active mobility and close community. Its guests consist of members of Warm Showers, a program that supports cyclists traveling through Europe by offering free accommodations at select hostels in exchange for companionship, travel information and occasional help repairing hostel bikes that are currently free to use to explore the city of Burgas. It also includes world travellers looking for reasonable prices to assist their exploration of the world, and volunteers who want to contribute to a purposeful project.

As you adapt to your surroundings, you forget about linens that do not match, and what you really start to notice is the constant chatter, laughter, occasional karaoke if youre lucky, and the regular sharing of drink, food and friendship. With its unique approach to reducing waste while building connections, with a special large outdoor space under a pergola covered in grape vines used to make fresh juice, this truly is a safe space with hospitality like no other. Come and experience a special community and learn about the future dreams of its visionary owner Evgany.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine we decidate to transform part of the buildings into individual spaces, each equipped with a bathroom, to be used for mothers with kids. There are some ongoing construction works, both inside the buildings and in the garden. All facilities are available (internet, hot water, electricity, beds etc...) but we want to give extra warning to visitors that some inconveniences may occur due to this works. We would grately appreciate any help from our visitors to continue and sustain initiative - HUG Ukraine, Facebook group.

Since the announcement of the partial mobilisation of Russian reservists, we expect refugees from Russia to come to our place. Many of them fly to Istanbul and Burgas is the first big city on their way to Europe. In order to be able to offer free hosting also to these refugees, we will need more donations!

Hug Center Hostel was build in 1980 from a state owned tourist company to be used for summer camp for boy scouts. Since 1990 the property was abandoned and the building were used for warehouses.

This year we decided to restore the dormitory in its original shape following the principles and the concept of MaRCo (Mobility and Responsible Consumption) using available materials and the support of volunteers. The idea is to promote responsible consumption and create community for exchanging ideas with the local people.

The accommodation is be simple and clean using the original exterior and interior to preserve maximum authentic feeling of the past.

The best thing in Burgas! I wish I could have stayed more nights, but I only had time for 1. Irene and James showed me around the homey space and picked grapes from their vine. I ate dinner that they cooked and was welcomed for their game of cards and chess and to spend the evening with them. It felt like a home away from in the middle of a chilly autumn. They even let me paint a mural on a section of their wall space! Not for those wanting a clean organised hotel-esque stay. Almost a homestay ❤️

Quirky hostel with a warm, warm welcome! Volunteers who run it often cook evening meals and residents are invited to join. Free grapes & fruit in season & walnuts. Stray cats also welcome so if you don’t like cats don’t go there 😊
