About Warrnambool

On the western tip of Australia's Great Ocean Road, Warrnambool is a laid-back surfing city with strong links to its seafaring past. It's peppered with heritage buildings, from the 19th-century Proudfoot's Boathouse to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, which has a listed lighthouse and a shipwreck museum. Between May and September, Warrnambool's whale watching platform on Logan’s Beach becomes a hive of activity, as travellers and locals gather to spot newborn right whales breaching and slapping their tails on the water's surface.

Book a Warrnambool hostel with an outdoor terrace, complete with a barbecue, or quirky motel style accommodation with free parking. Most have cosy common rooms with sofas and widescreen TVs, so you have somewhere to relax with other travellers. If you haven't brought a surfboard, hire one at the front desk; some Warrnambool backpackers hostels also rent bikes so you can explore the area. After a long sleep in your comfy dorm, help yourself to a free cup of tea or coffee and take it out to the garden.

In Warrnambool, you don't have to walk far before hitting the beach. The city's main hub branches out from Liebig Street in the centre, where artisan cafés and local eateries peek out from their shady front awnings. A short stroll from here brings you to the foreshore reserve: a strip of bushland that runs along the seafront. Wander through the low scrub to reach Warrnambool's collection of beaches, including the calm and sheltered Lady Bay and Logan's Beach, which is known for its excellent surf.

There's plenty to do in Warrnambool. Book a diving tour around the Merri Marine Sanctuary to swim with tropical fish close to land, or head out to explore Lady Bay's 29 shipwreck sites. Only 14km away, Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve sits on an inactive volcano site; you can follow hiking trails and picnic surrounded by kangaroos, emus and koalas. In the city, take a walk to discover Warrnambool's street art – it's hard to miss the enormous Ngatanwarr (welcome) mural on the corner of Kepler Street.

Warrnambool has its own local airport, which is about 13km from the city centre and has around 11 flights a week from Melbourne. You can then get a taxi into the city, which takes about 10 minutes. There are also V/Line trains from Melbourne (just over 3 hours), as well as buses that go west to Portland, or east along the Great Ocean Road. In the city, jump on a bike or explore the coastline by foot.
