Need a break from generic hostels and commercial routines? If you're looking for a place with good atmosphere, local culture & genuine hospitality, then Mali Mrak may be the place you're looking for. Run by a couple of friends from Zagreb, we keep our hostel (and guests) passionately away from the nondescript miasma of the tourist market, are easily considered a unique spot by the travelling community and are currently hosting our 18th year of backpackers.
Important Note: This is a backpacker's hostel and there is an array of lifestyles we do not host: 1. binge drinkers and the whole party thing, that's a no go here. 2. Constantly complaining and unhappy people with first world problems - kindly book elsewhere please. 3. We are not in the city center, important for those that want to be near the mainsquare and the tourist zone. Keep that in mind before booking, use google maps or similar to see distances. More about that towards the end of the description.
All card transactions have a bank fee of 3% attached because every use of the card machine costs us money and we are not paying for other people's convenience of using a card.
The City Tax (1.59€ per person per night ) is now included in the room price you book online. Since many wonder what that is, here goes: it's not something any hostel makes up, it's just that - a city tax that goes to the state of Croatia, a way for the state to make more money. I call it highway robbery, but there's no way around it.
Make sure to read the "things to note" section for check in stuff, it's for your benefit also.
• Parking is free in the entire neighborhood. The hostel street itself (Dubicka 8) is OFF limits for vehicles ,taxi, private car or motorbike. The address for parking and taxi arrivals is Ivaniceva street 16 - walk the rest of the way please . The whole area is free parking in a safe, public space.
• Each floor has AC's, the hostel is pet and bike friendly, you have a secure garage to store in. People with cars have free parking in a safe, public area
• Beds have privacy curtains and individual power sockets where possible due to architectural limits (attic)
• The house features 3 kitchens, one of them a huge outdoors kitchen located in our vibrant, green garden. You can even cook there while it's raining.
• If you're visiting in late summer/early autumn, the garden is giving an abundance of grapes - you're free to pick them as you sit, as they literally grow over our heads.
• Bring padlocks, we provide the lockers + there's a safe for specific things if you feel the need
The House itself is organic, cozy, and full of details, we do everything local and handmade, with nice, clean dorms that are constantly upgraded and decorated, don't expect boutique stuff here if you're into that.
Additional perks & special abilities:
- For those who care to explore Zagreb properly (there's more to most cities than just the tourist zone), we have excellent guides written exclusively for our guests only that will enable you to see so much more than just the regular stuff.
- Lots of hiking here, we've got a mountain in our backyard and many hiking trails for you to explore
- Left handed people get a discount (yes, it's not a joke and probably the only place anywhere that offers it :D Why? Figure it out, Sherlock :)
- Ambience plays a huge role here (a collection of 50+ lamps graces the house).
- The longest stay at the house was 3 years, the shortest 5 minutes.
- You can rent bikes, and if you're staying longer (4+ days) they're free. It's the best option to explore this city fully outside of the tourist zone
- Wi-Fi is sexy fast, 24/7, running on optics 500/100
- We offer really good prices for travelers who wish to stay longer in Zagreb, especially in off season. Ask!
- For those who are traveling on a budget and have certain skills- if you can and feel like it, feel free to contribute / upgrade the house in a specific way - we love that (you'll notice a ton of stuff people have done here) - create something and in return you can get a discount, free food and/or stay. You certainly wouldn't be the first, and we are known to support travelers in many more ways than just giving convenient bed prices. Contact us via email for details on that.
Location: Read the directions here on Hostelworld on how to find us, they're easy and precise. We are not central if that's a thing for you. Generally, we are not the best place for a one-night transit, it's about the hostel culture here, but you're welcome if you want but keep in mind: we prefer to stay outside the tourist zone and yet have quick access to the city center. We are located in an ordinary, safe neighborhood and Zagreb has an excellent, 24/7 public transportation system that connects you directly from the hostel to everywhere else, you'll need 15 min by tram to the center. Make sure you buy the cheaper tram tickets (0.5€, on a newspaper stand), it's very affordable and actually a cool thing to support public. Closest hiking spot is 15 minutes from the hostel on foot, but Zagreb has many other locations as well, we can help with that.
