2nd May 2018

Well equipped kitchen (but not allowed to use until midday) - they put on a great spread for breakfast but if (like us) you don’t want to eat cake/bread/fruit/sugarsugarsugar 1st thing in the morning then you may want to make other provisions... Rooms great, under bed lockers, lamp, bedside chargers, etc. 8 bed room is split with the shower room in the middle so feels more like 2 adjoined 4 beds - great! Nice small swimming pool. Staff very friendly and helpful!

This place is the bomb! The receptionist are so helpful friendly and they know so much about Fortaleza! They helped us with making bookings and even impartially told us when just getting an uber would be cheaper than booking a tour etc. Good kitchen. Showers are hot and powerful! Well decorated place. One of my favourite hostels so far in South America.

Disorganised. Arrived - told we had been double booked - go elsewhere - it was festival weekend in Fortaleza ALL hostels were full Obviously argued this - we were shown a room in a private house(??) 5 minutes away which we refused to take - then were asked to take dorm rooms (we had booked a private) - we refused this. After 90 minutes they somehow found (?!) a private room available and it was fine for us! But wasted 90 mins of our time + supermarkets had closed by the time we checked in.

Cr*p staff!! Checkin unorganised (give money - heres your key.), they had to chase us later for passport copy as not done at checkin, no info about the area (already stayed in Salvador but would be nice to offer) OR the hostel itself - meant we missed breakfast when went at 9:30am (they’ve cleared it away by then). Returned at 4pm ONLY to collect stored bags - met at door by staff “you should have completely left by latest 2pm - leave now.”?! Worst treatment had in year of hostels in South Amer.

MSP definitely worth the visit for the beaches! Great location just next to main square and a short walk from the harbour. On a Wednesday night the staff cooked some of the best burgers / chips / salad I’ve had in a long time, for just 25 reals!

Some of the best beds we’ve stayed in in South America - each dorm cubicle has lockable drawers with power socket, blackout curtains, lamp, under-bed lockable drawers - amazing! Location is right in the middle of historic centre. Kitchen is well stocked. Atmosphere a bit hit and miss.

Staff amazing and knowledgable about Salvador. Odd setup with the main Hostel building around the corner from the building with the dorm beds in. Unsure why pool was empty on arrival. Inside dorm building has feel like much of Salvador - a little run down. Breakfast was good - sausage and eggs included!

This hostel is so much better than the listing suggests! Firstly the staff were amazing - facilitating our hangovers with a place to sleep and ibuprofen after we had checked out and had 12 hours to wait until a late flight! They have a fairly decent kitchen to use which isn’t even mentioned on the listing! And the private room we stayed in was better than some we have paid twice as much for in Rio - top Hostel!!

Great location and staff. Kitchen is really well stocked - gas hob which means you can actually cook a steak (rather than just warming one up on those crappy electric hobs!). Rooms are a bit cramped once everyone is in with big backpacks - but they do have secure lockers which helps. Building feels a little rundown - would need a big makeover to bring it up to date - but overall a decent hostel.

Feels very much like a hotel with dorm beds. Very small bar / communal area - therefore doesn’t have a great atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and informative. Very well ran operation - just lacking that backpacking social atmosphere. Really feel like a kitchen would give it that communal atmosphere that is so important to travelling.

Great staff, multiple kitchens to cook in, decent breakfast offered, dorms are ok, beds comfy, very secure with locked doors to each dorm, didn’t try the attached restaurant but looked good value (pay per KG), staff helped us out when a boat tour pulled out last minute which meant we were able to find a last minute tour and not waste a day on the island.

Amazing hostel - great rooms, staff, big kitchen, free surfboards!!!, 2 minutes walk from a great beach and quite frankly ridiculously cheap! Good atmosphere but not so much a party hostel that you can’t sleep when you want to leave. Only loses a tiny point because bathrooms are a bit grotty (2 shared between about 20 people).

The owner (?big bald guy) is amazing - very knowledgable about all areas of Iguazu Falls - catch him in the morning for all your questions. Rest of the staff not so great - bit disorganised, simple checkin becomes a laboured process... Echo concerns about security - no lockers or obvious space to store bags - bedrooms become very crowded - simple drawer design under each bunk bed would fix. Checkout the nearby Churrasco - 40 reals for all you can eat meat

Circus Hostel & Hotel Montevideo, Montevideo, Uruguay

It appears it used to be a hotel that now also takes backpackers - the private room we had was amazing - after almost 2 months of having to use dorms throughout Chile + Argentina - to be able to afford a private room again! And the shower is epic. Breakfast is really good - usual breads and cereal - but the bread is GOOD (warm baguettes - not the terrible hard flat stuff) and fresh croissants, OJ, cafe, etc... Montevideo is a little underwhelming, but this hotel/hostel is a great place to stay.

Brazilian guy on reception - doesn’t want to work here or like tourists - didn’t want to answer simple question of what for breakfast (cereal bread), told me no frying pans in the kitchen (there ARE - you have to ask him to borrow one - didn’t want me borrowing it??!), asked for oil + salt for pasta he said no (only to add both to his meal he was cooking just seconds later). Kitchen is tiny and can only fit about 6 people in. Beds no good if over 6 foot tall - have to curl up / sleep diagonally.

Amazing hostel - more so, the owner - he welcomed us at midnight - cheerily told us he was upgrading us from 2 dorm beds to a private double ensuite for the same cost (first time in 3 weeks we enjoyed a double room) which was surprisingly good quality - great shower - would highly recommend. Also - 30 second walk from bus station making it ideal for quick connections.

The man who works on reception has GREAT advice - you should definitely consult him!! (I forget his name - this was a couple of months ago...). Has a kind of hotel feel - very active restaurant / social area - but most people sticking to their groups that they had arrived with - not much inter-mingling. Kitchen quite small if self cooking. And bathrooms all the way down the hall being shared by dozens of people. Great location.

Place is the bomb. You have to visit here. It makes staying in Pucon such fun. Amazing setup and workers / owners / volunteers. Kitchen communal cooking is amazing with almost all guests cooking in their own kitchens with dormmates chatting swapping stories etc. Cool activities arranged as well - had money stolen from HydroSpeeding company - no issue with Chilli Kiwi - just don’t take your wallet to an activity that it has to be left unattended - I had 20k pesos stolen!!

Good WiFi, good kitchen for self catering, overall a new place that comes across well - 2 critiques - both relating to the adjacent/adjoining restaurant - woken up both days by the sound of the kitchen coming to life at 7am - if you are in the downstairs dorm room you will hear every noise, every conversation, coming from that kitchen. 2nd critique - gluten free restaurant - some people will love it - as a gluten eater I found the bread disgusting in taste - how about offering gluten options?!

When our bus arrived 16 hours later than expected into San Pedro...these guys still allowed us to stay for our intended duration - despite arriving the morning AFTER our first booked night - without additional charge! Showers are really good, location excellent. Only downside is WiFi - you’re lucky if a webpage loads in less than a minute - but so I believe ALL of San Pedro...is afflicted the same.

Second time staying here - private room for 5 days - much better than staying in the dorms. Bar / restaurant is still main focus for staying here - daily drinking competitions / quiz’s / Karaoke - mean you could stay on site without leaving at all! Not the first choice if you were just staying in Cusco to trek and need some rest either side of; ideal if you’re travelling through Peru and want a lively hostel to party in Cusco!

The bar is the reason to stay here - a guaranteed party every night! Reasonably priced food + drinks. We don’t normally stay in dorm rooms but no privates were available at the time. Came back at a later date and stayed in the private rooms and actually managed to get some sleep haha! A little out of town but a 3 soles taxi will bring you up the hill to the hostel. Staff are amazing and attentive - really make this a hostel worth staying in.
