Property Description

The Hamakua House is a rustic guest house located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking Hamakua Coast. Make your next getaway greener by staying in this off-the-grid house. Our house is 'off-the-grid' which means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Hamakua Coast (Hawaii's 'green' side of the island) is the perfect place for an adventure vacation.

Easily accessible to all the Big Island attractions such as Volcanoes National Park (1 hour South), Waipio Valley (1 hour North), and the countless sights and adventures along the Hamakua Coast, the Hamakua House is the perfect location to base your Big Island adventure vacation. Located about 9 miles (13 minutes drive) North of Hilo (Hawaii's second largest city), the Hamakua House is remote and peaceful, while still being a short drive to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and galleries.

We offer a series of private (double occupancy) rooms with shared baths great for couples, individuals, or families. Shared bathroom with shower and tub. Access: our full kitchen, the common room (with a Netflix TV), our common dining room, our washing machine (hang dry clothes), and free WiFi.

The place is a safe, clean, and affordable, albeit remote. You can hear various types of tropical birds, different ones at night. Colorful geckos skiddle the walls and plants around. You have to be aware of two types of accommodations: there are beds in a house, but most are hummocks in small huts with walls made of mesh. One has to be ready to sleep in a hummock and guard against moskitoes. Otherwise it is a good place to stay.

Amazing place surrounded by nature. Hosts are very kind, the place provides everything you may need. Common spaces are clean and very cozy. I loved it there and wished I could stay longer!

A great way to try something really different and off the grid camping feel. Very isolated and Houston (the host) gave up on helping me find the location and put me to a voice mailbox (that was full). 😞 Area is very beautiful, waterfalls and nearby tropical drives, close enough to Hilo, with a fun waterfront shopping area to explore and a great little market. Mahalo!
