About Buffalo

Buffalo, New York, is the state's second largest city. Set on the shores of glassy Lake Erie, its famous neighbour to the north is the natural wonder of Niagara Falls. However, Buffalo has lots to offer on its own terms. Today, this former industrial city is best known today for grand Art Deco architecture, stylish craft breweries and, of course, the spicy, sticky wings with which it shares its name. Spend some time here to get acquainted with Buffalo's hometown, good-natured vibes.

Your Buffalo hostel could be a historic red-brick building in the heart of the city's thriving Theatre District. You can expect free Wi-Fi, cosy decor, and knowledgeable staff to help you find theatre shows, events, and other things to do while you're in town. Buffalo hostels with social spaces such as self-catering kitchens, movie rooms and spacious lounges mean that there are plenty of opportunities to meet other travellers. Look out for hostels in Buffalo with features like bike rentals and book exchanges.

Buffalo's city centre is full of distinctive neighbourhoods to explore. Canalside is a regenerated waterfront area of pedestrianised zones and green spaces. In summer it's home to food and music festivals, and in winter a skating rink. The Museum District has outdoor public art and grand architecture, including nearby Delaware Avenue Historic District's "Millionaire's Row", a street full of opulent mansions. In upscale Elmwood Village you'll find independent shops and artsy cafés. Bohemian Allentown's red brick buildings are home to chilled-out bars and the city's LGBTQ+ scene.

There's plenty on offer for art-lovers in Buffalo, from the gorgeous Art Deco City Hall to Picassos and Pollocks at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Catch well-known and up-and-coming musicals at the grand Shea's Performing Arts Center. Escape for some nature at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, where an elegant glass-domed conservatory houses a waterfall and orchid room.

The easiest way to get from Buffalo Niagara International Airport to downtown is by bus. The Airport Express takes around 30 minutes, and regular metro bus routes around one hour. Buffalo is well-connected to other cities by both train and road. It's easy to get around the city itself on Buffalo's extensive public bus network, and the Buffalo Metro Rail is free to ride (above ground) in the central downtown 'core'. You can also get around on two wheels. To cross the river, the Queen City Bike Ferry takes up to 25 bicycles (as well as their riders!) at a time.
