About Rockhampton

Famed for its steak, it’s no shock that Rockhampton is the beef capital of Australia. Which explains the 6 bull statues scattered around the town! Located in Central Queensland, it’s also known for its historic architecture and proximity to beautiful natural wonders, like the Mount Archer National Park and Fitzroy River. Though it’s a small city, it’s popular with backpackers as many pass through on their way to the Great Barrier Reef.

Choosing to stay in a Rockhampton hostel is a great way for backpackers to meet like-minded travellers and make new friends to explore the area with. You’ll find Rockhampton hostels located close to the ocean, or inland close to the Fitzroy River and city centre. So no matter what type of adventure you’re after, be it a beach or a city break, Rockhampton has something for all kinds of backpackers.

During your stay in Rockhampton you’ll find a variety of things to see and do, from eating the best steak in town to exploring deep under the earth at the Capricorn Caves. Located beneath the Berserker Range, the Capricorn Caves and their stalactites impress travellers from all around the world. The Kershaw and Botanic gardens are a great place to connect with nature and explore Australia’s flora and fauna, and architecture lovers can enjoy a stroll through Quay Street that boasts Victorian-era buildings.

Those interested in learning about the town’s culture and history should pay a visit to the Dreamtime culture centre, Archer Park Rail Museum or the Rockhampton Art Gallery. Should you find yourself keen to do some exercise, a hike up Mt Archer is the way to go! Walking trails take you through the stunning rainforest where you’ll be surrounded by an assortment of native plants. Once at the top, 604m later, you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of Rockhampton.

Exploring Rockhampton city centre via foot is a great way of getting familiar with the city and exploring its streets. To explore further out you’d need to hop on one of the Sun busses that service the area. Seeking more freedom? Why not round up your new hostel mates and hire a car for a day!
