About Wollongong
Looking for a coastal break, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy city? One that’s not flooded with tourists? Wollongong is perhaps the perfect weekend break or beach getaway for you. You’ll find this little haven just south of Sydney along the Great Pacific Drive. Its stunning coastline boasts picture-perfect beaches and inviting rock pools. The best thing about it? It’s only a 1-and-a-half-hour drive from Sydney.
Whether you’re thinking of a trip to Wollongong to hang and catch some waves or to explore the town and escape reality for a while, choosing to stay in a hostel will enhance your experience in numerous ways. Travelling alone or with company, you’ll find yourselves making new pals easily when staying in a Wollongong hostel.
Staying close to the city centre you’ll find yourself right amongst the action and within walking distance of the beach, score! Staying close to the city also gives you great access to public transport which makes getting around town a lot easier.
While you’re in town be sure to cast your eyes on and drive along the Grand Pacific Drive, an impressive 140km long, you’ll cruise through a rainforest and over a Sea Cliff Bridge where you’ll find yourself elevated 665m at one point. This stunning coastal town has amazing beaches that you can hop between. For snorkeling and perhaps a cute picnic head to Wattamolla Beach. For a cultural experience head to Nan Tein Temple, the largest Buddhist temple. Interestingly, Wollongong is the only place in Eastern Australia where you’ll find 2 lighthouses located so close to one another. If you’re looking for a cute Instagram pic, or just a place to watch the sunset perhaps the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse and/or the Wollongong Head Lighthouse should be on your to-do list.
Wollongong has a free, yes free, Gong shuttle bus which makes life a whole lot easier (and cheaper). There are also other bus services – the Premier Illawarra and Dions - that operate on a regular schedule. If you’re looking to travel a little further out of town hop on-board a train and go exploring the stunning coastal towns further out. For maximum freedom why not gather some of your new hostel mates and hire a car to explore the town, coastline and the outer suburbs.
