Hobart Central YHA is one of the most central hostels in all of Hobart – we are right opposite the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, one block from the Harbour and less than 10 minutes walk to Salamanca.
Our staff hail from all over the world but have decided to call Hobart home and are more than happy to help you plan your island adventure. We know the best tour operators (hint: they’re not all on Instagram) the secret spots, how to get there and how to fit it all in to your 5 day itinerary (because you probably thought Tasmania is “just that little island underneath Australiaâ€, right?).
If you prefer recommendations for good coffee and amazing local produce over where to find the cheapest goon, then we’re probably the hostel for you. We have regular activities that change with the season so make sure you check out our website to see what’s on.
Reception is attended from 8am - 10pm. If arriving outside these hours, please call the number on the front door and the night supervisor will assist you.
Due to the shared nature of the facilities at YHA properties, YHA may require all guests to provide proof of vaccination. A safe stay is our top priority so we have enhanced hygiene measures in place, along with social distancing practices.

Great atmosphere overall, but due to no fans you would need the window open to keep the room cool during warmer season. Therefore it is very hard to get any sleep due to all the noise from outside. Also not the best beds in the world. The mattress is as hard as a rock and the pillow provided might as well not even bother having one.

I wanted to like it because it’s in a great spot bug was sadly very disappointed with this grimy hostel. It did not meet my expectations of a YHA and certainly not at $57 a night for a dorm bed. There were multiple bloodstains on the mattress covers, hairs on the bed sheets. Bathrooms and bedrooms are old, crumbly and the whole place is cramped with an overwhelming tobacco smell. I was so surprised for a YHA. I cancelled my second night.
