Culture and nature come together in Nelson. On New Zealand's South Island, the city is a sunshine hot spot – and it has the beaches to match. Once you're finished soaking up the sun, there's a thriving arts and crafts scene to explore. Wander down to Nelson Market to pick up your souvenirs, or get back to basics and bask in the surrounding wilderness. From hiking in Kahurangi National Park to sitting by the alpine Lake Rotoroa, these picturesque natural scenes are the ideal backdrop for a wholesome break.

Go a little upmarket and choose a Nelson hostel in a boutique lodge, or satisfy your sweet tooth in a place that gives away free chocolate pudding daily. There are Nelson hostels on the waterfront, so you can wake up to views of the shore. Fill up before a day out at a place that offers free breakfasts or get your heart racing at a hostel with a beach volleyball court. The neighbourhoods in Nelson are eclectic and varied. Nelson Central is the place to be for lots of restaurants and the main sights. To get off the path a little, head into Stepneyville. It's near the port, so you can admire the views out over Tasman Bay. Want to get back to nature? Wander over to Maitai, home to plenty of greenery and a tranquil walkway by the river. 

There's no shortage of things to do in Nelson. Abel Tasman National Park has lots of opportunities for hiking, kayaking or simply taking a slow stroll. Back in the city, Tahunanui Beach is a central stretch of soft sands, perfect for a gentle morning walk or an afternoon in the sun. To get the adrenaline pumping, head over to Cable Bay Adventure Park, or get in touch with your creative side at the World of Wearable Art Museum, home to world-class design. For a relaxed way to sample New Zealand's legendary produce, check out the Nelson Wine Trail around the local vineyards. 

Nelson International Airport is around 45 minutes by bus from Nelson Central. Hop on the number 1 or 2 to head into the city. To get around once you arrive, take a local bus or rent a bike. The InterCity bus terminal in the centre runs regular services to other big cities if you're looking for onward travel too.
