Property Description

La Sardina invites guests and long-term residents into the heart of the arts and culture movement in Todos Santos, a nationally-designated Pueblo Magico, or Magical Town, in Baja California Sur. One of the few international hostels that specifically caters to visual/performance artists, musicians, and writers and all with an explorers’ Bohemian soul…If you prefer going barefoot, and you’d rather have an amazing experience than sateen sheets, La Sardina is an experience you’ll want on your Must Do list. Close to righteously world-famous surf breaks, mountain backpacking trails, and generally breathtaking vistas, La Sardina is an “Art Hostel, for artists and explorers by artists and explorers.”

La Sardina is a rustic hostel, but with surprising touches of luxury and art around most corners. From the bohemian emerging art garden to the paintings and murals decorating the spaces, from the moment you enter, you know there’s something just a little magical about this place. While owner/resident Cristian Racansky, an accomplished globe-hostel-trotter himself, will be the first to say that the real magic happens with the creativity and connections made between the guests, there’s no doubt that he has created a unique and wonderful sanctuary for artists, creatives, makers, and adventurous, open-minded Bohemians.

There are a few options for residency at La Sardina, in a range of prices to accommodate all! From the tent space tucked under a young palm tree starting at $250pesos/night to the luxury palapa with its limited seasonal availability to the semi-private four-bed dorm, to “The Thing,” an adventure for experienced travelers, with four bunks with two beds each, to the artist-in-resident’s cabanita, each bed comes with its own electrical outlet, lockable under-bed storage, a shower and bathroom space, and access to the Skilink high-apeed internet. The facility offers a full kitchen with gas stove, pots, pans, cooking equipment, oven, blender, and refrigerator (although space is limited for guests), tableware and mugs, and all the coffee you can drink anytime day or night! The semi-private dorm has its own bathroom and shower, as does the palapa. There are two outdoor showers and two bathrooms for the artist-in-residence and guests bunking in “La Cosa” and lounging and working spaces aplenty scattered around the property.

It isn’t unusual to come out of your room and find a fellow guest or one of the artists-in-residence painting in the art garden while a visiting singer/songwriter from Belgium runs through some new chords on the rooftop deck. The resident/owner, Cristian is also an accomplished chef, known internationally for his love of doing deep dives into local artisanal cuisines and bringing back traditional recipes, going so far as to cultivate his own ancestral corn strains in order to recreate authentic Tortillas. And, although we don’t promise it will happen every visit, it’s not unusual to find him whipping up some breakfast spread, or even better, preparing a feast for the residents for dinner! The staff, well-traveled, often artists and makers themselves, are wonderful people, experienced with the local scene, and restaurants, and always around to help out with whatever you are wanting to find.
