So, while in Rio, take your eyes off the smartphone screen and be prepared for the amazing adventures each corner can offer.

There are three main regions to find your hostel in Rio de Janeiro: the centre, the south (Zona Sul) and Barra da Tijuca. The centre getters the museums, churches and historical buildings, gives easy access to the other regions and offers cheap hostels. The south has the most famous beaches, the beautiful Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon (one of the best places to get your chill on in Rio) and the most hype hostels. And Barra, further away from the centre, has higher prices, but it’s perfect for those who want more tranquillity and an ocean perfect for surfing.

What to do in Rio? Start with this basic list: bathe in the waters of Ipanema beach, wonder in Copacabana´s sidewalk (the famous “calçadão”), see the sunset in Arpoador rock, lose yourself in Lapa’s nightlife, go hiking in Floresta da Tijuca and rest in the beautiful Botanical Garden or in the iconic Lage Park. Not forgetting visiting Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain, the city’s landmarks. Anyone who wants to dig into the local history and culture can’t miss the Municipal Theatre, the CCBB museum, the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet (home of one of the most gorgeous libraries in the world!) and Catete Palace. Want to wander a little further? Board a cheap ferry and discover Paquetá Island, an adorable and historical islet in Guanabara Bay, or get a bus and reach Niterói city, home of MAC museum (based in an impressive building signed by Oscar Niemeyer, internationally recognised Brazilian architect).

The easiest wat to get around in Rio is… all of them! The subway is ideal to make the connection between the city centre and Zona Sul and to get to the main attractions. The bus can be useful for longer routes, like Galeão Airport or Niterói - but try to avoid traffic jams! And transportation apps are a good idea for short rides and night-time journeys.
