About Sheffield

Sheffield, the so-called Steel City, has come a long way since its starring turn in The Full Monty, transforming into one of the most characterful destinations in the North of England. With homegrown talent like the Arctic Monkeys, the city has a thriving music scene and plays host to the annual Tramlines festival. Ranked the sixth greenest city in the UK, Sheffield has 150 woodlands and 50 public parks, and is only a short distance from the Peak District National Park.

Whether you’re planning a day in the mountains or recovering from a night out, a Sheffield hostel offering a free daily breakfast is sure to go down well. The northern love of a good brew is clear with free hot drinks served all day. You can also try cooking up a feast in a spacious communal kitchen. Expect to find free Wi-Fi throughout hostels in Sheffield, as well as laundry services available on-site.

Ecclesall (or Eccie to locals) Road leads from the city centre down to Endcliffe Park, with lots of reasonably priced student bars, traditional pubs and chain restaurants. In the city centre, Division Street and Devonshire Street have independent shops and lively drinking venues, including one in a renovated fire station. Real ale lovers will want to head to the Kelham Island area, home to a brewery and several beloved pubs with an impressive selection on tap.

The award-winning Winter Garden houses more than 2,500 plants from around the world and is located next door to the city’s design and arts hub, the Millennium Gallery. Just 20 minutes on the bus will take you to the Peak District National Park, where you can explore cosy country pubs, walking trails and majestic landscapes. Or you can visit Chatsworth House, a stately home located 25km away in neighbouring Derbyshire, to stroll around the 105 acres of gardens and a working farmyard.

Sheffield has a Supertram and local bus network that will get you around the city in no time. There are four international airports within an hour’s drive of the city: Manchester Airport, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport and Nottingham East Midlands Airport. Sheffield is also well connected to other cities in the North of England by train, and a direct link to London St Pancras International train station takes 2 hours. Sheffield train station is a 10-minute walk from the city centre and has its own on-site pub.
