It's a nice place, it's close to the tourism monuments and the pubs and restaurants. Everything is clean and the staff are sympathic however i found it's quite expensive to pay 40$night for a bed in a 16 beds dorms.

Great hostel, very good location and great staff, probably the best I've ever visited.. Very clean, very attentive staff, activities scheduled every night, and what else can be said of the location, right in the heart of the old city!!! The only two downsides: Wi-Fi is free but the use of the computers are not. And I'm still wondering how the balance I had to pay according to my Hostel World receipt got a $16.57 increase once I got there...

Owner Comment (Show)
Salut Jean, First of all, thank you for the kind review and I'm very happy that you enjoyed your stay! Regarding the $16.57 difference you wrote about...this is mentioned on the Hostelworld website before you make your reservation as well as the email confirmation that you receive directly from us after you"ve made your reservation: in the United States tax is not included in the price (actually, when I stayed in Vancouver last month it wasn't included there either) and also we're associated with HI and HI imposes a $3 per night daily membership fee if you don't have a yearly membership. I'm sorry if you didn't see this before you made your reservation and that we didn't explain this to you when you checked in. It's definitely not something we try to hide. Bien à vous, Marc Desmarais

They don't wash the blankets that they have on the beds - gross. However, my biggest problem was with the rudeness of the staff. When I arrived by car I called to ask for help locating the parking garage THEY recommend on their site because I was having trouble. The receptionist was rude and unhelpful to both of my phone calls. She wouldn't even look up the address even though she had a computer right in front of her. The next day another receptionist was rude to my friend. Will not stay again.

Great location in the historic part of town. Free pasta dinner on Wednesday. Clean kitchen and wash areas. Definately worth a stay. Lacks individual character as a chain hostel but the area and attention to detail definately make up for this. Plenty of bars in the area.

Hi Andy, Thanks for staying with us and joining in our nightly activities! We're a bit hurt by your comments regarding our character. We're a Canadian and German who met, fell in love and opened our own hostel in 2008. It's the only hostel we have. We hired a Canadian artist from Toronto to create most of the art throughout the lobby including our "wall of hands". Obviously, we're guilty of using a lot of Ikea furniture, but other than that I don't think you'll find another hostel like ours anywhere in the world! Let me know if you do!

Great hostel, but 24 beds in the male dorm is a lot, especially if you assume 1/4 of them are snoring.

Stayed only 1 night in this hostel, travelled as solo female traveller and stayed in 16 bed female dorm. Pros: Very good location, helpful friendly staff, communal area, lockers available in rooms Cons: No breakfast, coffee and tea facilities don't include milk Recommend it overall, though not more then 1 day is required in Philadelphia

Hi Melita, I'm sorry that you weren't more impressed with your stay. Instead of breakfast (although we do have free cereal and oatmeal on the weekends and a discounted breakfast 7 days a week) we offer free wine and cheese on Tuesday nights, a free pasta dinner on Wednesday nights, free mixed drinks before our free pub crawl on Thursday nights and free beer every other night. What's most disapointing is that you didn't bother to stop at reception to let us show you all the great things there are to see and do in Philadelphia. You definitely need at least 3 days to see everything in Philly and that's without entering any of our fantastic museums. Did you even visit Eastern State Penitentiary? Please come back some day and REALLY see America's most historic city!

I think this hostel was very good. But, it didn't provide patrons with breakfast. It was very inconvenient. Except for it, I like this hostel.

Hi Rinae, I'm sorry, but instead of offering breakfast at the hostel everyday, we instead offer free things in the evenings to help everyone socialize. Every evening we have either free beer, free wine and cheese, free pasta or free drinks. Most of our guests prefer this. We do offer free cereal and oatmeal on the weekends and every day of the week we have a very cheap breakfast option at a nearby American diner where our guests receive a 10% discount. We usually mention this at check in, but there are also signs all over the hostel mentioning this. But if you don't like to meet other guests, then I hope your next hostel has breakfast!

Best hostel I've ever stayed in. The staff was nice and helpful from the very first moment, they had many tips of what to do that you usually don't look up on the internet. The location is awesome (5 min walk from Liberty Bell and Congress Hall). We had a great time watching movies and playing Wii all night, so if you don't feel like going out after an exhausting day in Philly you still have the opportunity to do something else than going to bed ;-)

Maybe it was daily interactions with unhappy people. Both staffers I met were sullen or indifferent. I was just another body. That's ok, I just needed a bed and a secure place to sleep, and it was that.

Great location and staff. Very clean bathrooms, showers and kitchen area. They have lockers for belongings, so don't forget to bring a lock of some sort. Overall value for money.

Apple was one of few hostels in Philly but it worked out quite nicely. The location in Old City was really nice but the hostel itself was on a side street down an alley which is less than pleasant to walk down alone at night. But it wasn't that bad, the area itself is pretty safe. Staff was friendly, facilities were standard and clean, nothing to complain about here.
