I would not recommend this hostel. After getting off a night bus and arriving at 7am we were not given beds even though there was plenty of empty beds in the dorm we booked. We finally checked in after 2pm and had to ask for someone to make up the beds at 3pm! The room was filthy and so and the bathroom smelt so bad....there was a member of staff asleep on an unmade bed in the for the entire day and slept in a different bed each night we were there, 3 days later he was still in the same clothes.
Loved our stay in cielo rojo. A massive thank you to Gervasio who helped us when a car park just down the road were trying to rip us off. You are a legend! Just a warning to those with cars. don't pay 300 pesos a day for parking, shop around and be sure of the cost before u leave your car.
The building is just meant to be as a hostel. However, it hasn't been fully realized it. It is poorly managed. The beds are very bad. To noisy. The upper bed doesn't has a proper stair, therefore, whenever one wants to go down it makes to much noise and movement, that somehow ends up waking the person sleeping in the bed below. Also, several times the restroom didn't have toilet paper. Nevertheless, it has good features, as its coffee, beyond 11 pm it becomes quite, the staff helps you a lot.
The staff here was amazing, we arrived at 6am from a night bus, and they let us crash in the bonus room until they had beds for us. They weren't even the slightest bit perturbed that we had obviously woken them up. As far as negative aspects: the shower depended what room you were in (some were hot, some not), and the breakfast was a little lack-luster, and the bunk beds may fall apart one day. Overall, this hostel is a great bang for the buck, great location, and has wonderfully friendly staff.
Best shower I've had since......home! GREAT water pressure! GREAT hot water! Great location - very close to the zocalo, mercado, etc. We arrived early, before check-in time, so we had to wait for beds to become free, which was fine. We waited for check-in time and then had to ask a couple times if our beds were ready, which was annoying. After 24+ hours in the same clothes and having slept on the night bus, we *really* just wanted to take a shower & unpack. Other than that, nice place.
Good place to stay! The ambiance is nice to meet other people due to the communal place in the middle of the house. It the other hand, it is a bit loud cause every room is around this place. Shared bathrooms are shared bathrooms ; but still very clean and well maintened. I appreciated my stay although it wasn't one of these AMAZING hostel you can find on your trip!
Great hostel and 5 mins from the centre. The staff are helpful and give lots of advice. Good breakfast, toast, fruit cereal, yoghurt, coffee, that kind of thing. Nice central space, great roof terrace. The beds are a little... Unstable? You can definitely feel the movements of those above or below. Great atmosphere, small lockers in room and front door locked. Great hostel!
Excellent place to stay at! ;-) Me encanto este hostel! Los empleados son super amables - El desayuno es muy basico - pero en genral un muy buen hostel ;-)
Thought this was a really great hostel with really really nice staff. Excellent roof terrace and lots of areas to hang out. Great fun.
The strange thing was getting in at night. I would be nice if there was someone on patrol the entire time. Also, I understand it is a hostel but hand soap in the toilet facilities would be nice too.

Really enjoyed my stay. Very friendly lady who runs it. She even let me in when I arrived early at 7am after a night bus and I could go straight to my dorm and go to bed! Perfect. Just what I needed and no problems.
Please give out keys to each person in dorms so that the doors can be locked to secure our belongings.

This could be a great hostel but unfortunately it had some of the worst staff that I've seen at a hostel. The staff seemed barely bothered with the guests during the day. They didn't know which beds were free and neglected to note that we had paid. Then, at about 4 am one of the staff members brought back about 10 of her closest friends to party in the open courtyard. They woke everyone and laughed when asked to be quiet.
- only smal lockers in the living room!
Great location, just a few blocks away from the Zocalo, very close to the 1st class buss station and to Santo Domingo. Lovely central courtyard to relax and have a beer in. The staff is very helpful and friendly. During my stay there was a cinema-night were they showed a documentary about group Raices (a Oaxacan group that plays "son jarocho"), the surprise was that at the end, the group appeared on stage and everybody -staff and travelers- started to dance the "son jarocho".
Good location, built like a fort so super secure. Lovely central courtyard to relax and have a beer in. Staff were nice but kept to themselves. This is a tranquil kind of place, so don't expect a party (or at least this is how it was during our stay). Would stay there again, easily.
Very helpful staff, thoughtful operation, great location and facilities, very nice dorms and sunny courtyard common area. I'll stay here in a heartbeat if I come back to Oaxaca (good chance of that).
Cielo Rojo was my favorite of the 5 or 6 places I've stayed in Oaxaca (I'm working in a small village outside of town and come into the city on the weekends). The folks who work here were so kind and really interesting, as were the other guests -- many doing cool longer term projects. There's a rooftop view and a nice downstairs courtyard. The whole vibe was relaxed and do as you please with very good music. Also seemed very queer positive / LGBT friendly!
