Shingo-san and his family were very helpful with ideas on what to do and how to find places. They are so friendly! They know all the places for vegetarians to eat. Very close to the bus station/train station and an easy walk to the old town.
The location was great and the owner was very helpful. The only criticism I can give is that it was very noisy outside of our room very early due to the shared bathroom sinks in the hall. This made sleeping in very difficult.
Walk into this hostel and become part of a family. Run by a friendly, travel enthusiast couple with an adorable son, this place has all the comfort and facilities that you may ever need and much more: a cozy, laid-back atmosphere and an amazing friendliness. You can ask anything about sightseeing around, hiking in the mountains or find the best onsens, you'll get all the information and help you need, even when it comes to planning your onward journey. In all, this place is just perfect.
Very intimate and small. Shingo is a great hostel owner and host and took good care of us. Keep in mind that this isn't a party hostel and not the best place to meet backpackers, nevertheless it is clean, aesthetic and pleasant. By the way Haru (owners son) is adorable!!
A really nice stay in a cosy guest house! I felt at home.
Not as clinical as some other hostels, the best thing here is the personal touch. The fact the owner came and said hello, and that everyone was so friendly was great, and the vibe inside, and the decor, is more like being at a friend's quaint house than being in a hostel. Very enjoyable.
Friendly guesthouse. The owners are very helpful and compared to other Japanese guesthouses I stayed at, this was the best. There is good size area to mingle or not depending on what you want to do. It's very relaxed.
One of the best gesthouse i stay so far. Staff are really really really great. When you go there you fell like member of the familly.
Takayama is a pleasant city a little off the beaten track and this was a lovely place to explore it from.
I had a great time at Tomaru Guest House, I would like to thank the staff for being so welcoming and helpful to the customers.
The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a great place to stay. The comments on the lack of room for suitcases is silly--are people carrying trunks these days? Dorms were spacious. Only changes I would suggest are listing the bikes for rent on the Hostel World page and showcasing how easy it is to self cater in the kitchen. Also the guidebooks you have available are very helpful.
The hostel is a 70 year old japanese house situated just 2 minutes walking from the train/bus station. It is a great place for those who want to have a good time outside the chaos of Tokyo and other big cities. Very calm and relaxing. The couple who owns the place is also very nice and friendly.
I had a lovely stay at Guesthouse Tomaru! The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, and were kind (and patient!) enough to speak to me in Japanese after I told them I was studying. The Guesthouse is conveniently located near the station and a short walk from most places. The common room was also a nice place for a solo traveller to hang out in the evenings and meet some interesting people. I would love to stay here again! 皆さん、ありがとうございました！

There is nothing to complain about the place. Definition of Japanese attention to detail and perfectionism.
