I stayed for 5 days in interacted with about 10 people who work there. Without exception they were excellent - polite, knowledgeable and friendly.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. The place has a lot of character and there is art along the walls. I highly recommend it. In terms of security, I rated it average because a couple times when I walked in the staff didn't seem very attentive to who I was (some staff members recognized me, but others I am not sure did but didn't ask for the slip of paper to show I had a reservation). As other people have mentioned, the neighborhood was loud. There was a sign saying could ask for a quieter room

I really liked the hostel, the staff were friendly and it is in a great location. The bed sucked, though. I was sleeping in a dip in the center of the mattress for two nights, so it was really uncomfortable. It's also loud at night, but I expected that.

This is a pretty standard hostel, in a good location. There is a hidden fee for not being a member of hostelling international and a 12.5% tax that I was unaware of that made our stay here about the same cost as a hotel. My wife and I stayed one night and then moved to a hotel as it was the same price to stay in a hotel as it was to stay in the hostel. Our room also had a strong smell of sewage the whole time we were there.

Great and friendly staff, very helpful with the know of the city. The hostel sits in the heart of Gaslamp district, so great location. Would stay here again.

Definitely value for money if you are attending a conference at the San Diego Convention Center. The breakfast was generous. I asked for a quiet room and I got it. Of course there was the obligatory drunk kid laughing his guts out just outside my room at 2 am on a Saturday night but fortunately I could drop off to sleep again. My only gripe: housekeeping did not extend to making my bed or changing my bed linen in spite of a 9 night stay. Or perhaps it was my job to ask for fresh sheets?

My husband and I stayed at San Diego hostel one night in late February. We had our private room and bathroom which were clean and quite. The only problem I think is that the hotel doesn't have its parking lot which can be pain in the neck after a long drive. However, there is a parking garage for 15$ overnight just a block away. Overall the atmosphere was alright.

The location is wonderful and also the staff helped me a lot during the 1 day I stayed there (1 of them reccomended me about a bar with beautiful Soul band). The only thing is the noise that I had in my room. Not a noise from the people that were staying-but rather from the street. My room was in a corner of 2 streets, and the window(when closed) wasn't 100% sealed.I didn't try to switch rooms because I had only 1 night to stay there but there's a chance that if I asked-I would recieve other

Great place! Enjoyed all the tours and advice on places of interest. Lavaughan and Cosy have a great walking tour of Balboa park with a true local commentary on the city's past. Henry and Ingrid provided maps and inspiration on beaches, local spots and the best places to eat. The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful. It was easy to meet other travellers and share stories. Highly recommended!

Lovely place to stay. Great free breakfast. The ban on alcohol was a bit strange though, I didn't expect that, however it created a good vibe in the Hostel. Really clean Hostel, lovely staff, great location, met some awesome people here.

Overcharged ~$100 upon arrival for no reason, overcharged the city tax, super-tiny room, no privacy in the room as there was a loosely shut/locked door with a nice slit (to voyeur the neighbors, huh?), very inadequate soundproofing of walls/doors/windows (in Gaslamp district!) - I could not sleep in the night. Intermittent wireless Internet - it is not possible to do anything because it works, and then stops, and then works and stops again. Overall, the worst hostel experience ever.

We are coming to the end of a 12 month trip around the world and this hostel is one of the nicest we have stayed in. The kitchen facilities are brilliant, free breakfast of cereals, bread and fruit between 8am and 10am every day. Free tea and coffee all day. The staff were helpfull and is in a great location right in the centre of town. A few blocks from Ralphs and other shopping centres. Our only issue was the Wi Fi did not work for the full week we were there as they were having problems.
