We had a double room, and were pleased to find we had ensuite toilet facilities- very unusual in a hostel! The shower was excellent, though you had to stand on a chair to plug in the immersion heater, which was a bit dodgy. We were given a room where the toilet didn't flush, but were immediately allocated another room, and this was fine. A nice lounge area, with bar.. Only one of the staff spoke good English, but she was there a lot. Excellent cheap laundry facilities.

I stayed at this hostel during the off-season and it was fairly quiet. The location is excellent (very convenient and close to amenities and sites). The staff were fine. For a place to crash in Urumqi, I'd stick with Maitian in the future. Some travelers might like to know that there are cats in the common area, so if you have serious allergies or aversions to felines, this might not be the place for you.

I booked one of the private rooms for more security. I was out of the hostel for a few hours, and came back to find the door to my room hanging wide open, and a worker going in and out. I find that to be an unacceptable security breach. It was inviting theft. I think competent staff would have waited until there was no one staying in the room to have work done on it. And if not, they should have waited until I was present to go into my room with my consent. The bathroom was also full of mold.

Our private double was a steal at 110, and loved being right behind Parkson for groceries. Super-lame desk attendants were super-unhelpful and lethargic, but the manager, when in, was better. We went to the Silver Birches hostel just to get some advice on what to do around Urumqi - they were awesome, but the location wasn't great.

Due to the renovating I couldn't fully enjoy the whole charm of the place or use all of the facilities, but I think once they're finished it will be a very pleasant hostel to stay at. During my stay there were only between two and six people staying there, so it was a good time for renovating though.

Staff was very helpful although only a couple spoke english, rooms were clean with ensuite bathroom in the dormitory rooms. A little chilly at night (I stayed at the end of January) but otherwise perfect. Highly reccomended!
