This was a great find. If you want a Ryokan that the Japanese choose then this is your place. Small number of rooms, Wonderful Japanese family that own it. Cosy onsen at night. This was the best Ryokan we have stayed in in Japan. It is a small family owned one with I think 10 - 12 rooms ( I didn't count, just guessing). We were the only western guests and the rest were Japanese which to me was a good sign on authenticity.
We had a really nice stay in this Ryokan. The ladies were so sweet with us and we had little suprises and tea every days. We recommend this place if you want to live the Japanese way in Takayama.

In the midway of the JR station and the heritage village where the main attractions are. Depends on your itinerary but it was perfect for me who split 50/50 in town and taking day trips from Takayama. A traditional Japanese house with equally traditional tatami rooms, bathes and stairs. Only serveral rooms so it felt rather cozy. Would be perfect if the staff speaks English but this is noted in advance and the local tourist infromation bureau was helpful.. All in all, it was a nice stay!
