There's not much to do in Otaru but if you are going for maybe 1 night tops, this is a great place to stay. It has a dog and a cat, and a really cosy living room that's great for an afternoon nap after walking around the Shrine with a view of the mountains right next to the hostel, or the Otaru canals, which are quite close. Best to go here with close friends, but a very enjoyable stay

nice hostel

Otarunai is a hostel that you would miss the minute you are checking out =) I had an enjoyable stay!

one of the reason that I chose this hostel is that they have a cat and dog , but when I saw the cat was chained in a small area ,my heart was broken......it's very cruel to chain a cat ..while the dog is free ... the host is always sitting in the dining area watching the kitchen, so I don't feel relax to use the facility. and I felt like I was staying in a stranger's place and under one's surveillance, can't talk or laugh freely.everyone whispered except the host and his staff....

i was sorry to experience inconvenience with using hot water in sink and minami otaru staion is much better to find morinoki (it takes some time from otaru station..) but the cozy atmosphere was so good!

Interesting host. A lot of happening at this place.Great Japanese style guesthouse.

One of the best places to stay in Hokkaido if not Japan. The people here are wonderfully warm, friendly and welcoming. There is both excellent breakfasts and dinners available for excellent prices (Seriously cheaper then even the old 7/11 dinner). Cannot recommend highly enough!

The owner is very knowledgeable; the breakfast option was so good; the staff in general were so kind and made me feel like part of the family. I went out one night with some of them and definitely talked with them a bunch. The location is 10 minutes tops from the canal. Lovely place and lovely city

staff is friendly and helpful, place is clean. so everythings fine here. only thing is that due to thin or nonexisting walls its not possible to sleep longer than 8am

The staff is very kind, the hostel homey and clean. Not too far from central Otaru. If you have a car it is a good place to stay and take day trips around Hokkaido. I will definately stay there again. They serve dinner and breakfast for around 500yen. All in all an absolute pleasure stay there.
