THE CITY

Welcome to the romantic city of Porto - known for its unique wine, its stunning views over the mouth of the Douro River, the old neighbourhoods and its fervent residents, always ready to help anyone - all of which will make your visit unforgettable. Portugal's second-largest city, located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of Europe's oldest centres, and its historic riverside centre was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, a relic in the city. Its settlement dates back many centuries when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal," based on transliteration and vocal evolution from Latin

Great stay just around the corner from one of the citycenters of porto. Easy to get to with public transport and a but of a maze to get to with the car (in the end we parked a few streets over). Easy to get into, even after hours. The desk is only manned in the morning, but all the info is online or in the room. The only downside is that the room door changed from a cardreader to a normal lock and we didn't realise that you had to physically lock the door, so someone barged in during the night.

The location is convenient to most touristic sites as well as São Bento station but street noise in the rooms is quite loud at night…and closing the windows and wooden shutters made the room very warm. The staff is friendly but only there in the mornings. They have notices that water and beer plus other things are available but there is no way to purchase anything after 1. Bathrooms are clean, good size towels but they rely on guests to wash their dishes..most with cold water.

Hostelworld says

Oporto Poets Hostel is located less than five minutes? walk from the Ponte de Dom Luis I, Palacio da Bolsa, Porto Cathedral and much more. This hostel features stylish, air and uniquely designed rooms with secure underbed lockers, multiple common areas and free walking tours. Their multi-lingual staff serve a very budget friendly three-course meal with wine where ?the staff sit down and eat with you, including the chef, and it gives you the chance to meet local people?, according to our users. We like that they thoughtfully also offer free phrasebooks.
