The Fortezza da Basso or San Giovanni Battista in homage to the patron saint of Florence, is since 1967 the main structure of the fair-congress center of Florence and central Italy, located in a strategic position in the historical center of the city. It is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, built between 1534 and 1536 on a design by the court architect Antonio da Sangallo the young man for the first duke of Florence, Alessandro de 'Medici.
