As a hostel owner of some 23 years myself, it’s very clear to see when an owner has reached ‘burn out’. Valentin ‘welcomed us’ by complaining about the wall we left our bikes against, then proceeded to explain how to shut off the defective toilet faucet. We were upgraded to a private room, a tiny room with defective light fittings and spongy beds. He explained why the kitchen was under equipped because guests couldn’t be trusted. The courtyard is nice enough but alongside a noisy busy road.

Nikoleta was the sweetest, most caring host I’ve ever had at a hostel. She knew all the information you could ever want to know about Ohrid, and would go out of her way to help you with anything. Plus, the location was close to the bus station and a short walk to the beach. If I come back to Ohrid I will absolutely stay here again!
