With great prices and a super central location just three blocks from Union Square, Amsterdam Hostel ticks all the boxes. While the setting and regular social events (like our fun pub crawls) mean that you'll be spending most of your time out in the city, we've got the facilities to make you feel at home when you just need to chill – including common areas and a welcoming terrace. If you need a night off bar-hopping, hang out in the lounge for one of our daily movie nights.

We're surrounded by boutique shops, popular restaurants and top sights. Jump on one of the city's iconic cable cars or explore the eclectic streets of Chinatown, a 13-minute stroll away. Rent one of our bikes for a ride along the Golden Gate Bridge, 6 miles away, to the cute town of Sausalito, before taking a ferry back for lunch at the artisan food market in the famous Ferry Building. To get to us from San Francisco International Airport, take the yellow BART train and get off at Powell Street Station, a 15-minute walk from the hostel.

Pick from private rooms or mixed and female-only dorms – all of which have their own en-suite bathrooms. Linen and towels are included, and you'll have a free locker to keep your belongings safe (you'll need your own padlock). If you're staying in the city for longer than a week, ask for our discounted rates.

There's a kitchen with free coffee and tea, as well as free Wi-Fi so you can plan your trip to perfection.

    - 24hr reception to buzz you into the property - male on front desk exceptionally rude but other staff were pleasant enough - everywhere was below standard cleanliness apart from the rooms - kitchen was functional - lacked social space but was easy to meet people at breakfast (cook your own pancakes)

We didnt love it. We ended up departing early and sleeping at the airport because it was too noisy. The room windows align with the common room below, so you can hear everything.

You get what you pay for service. Staff is non chalant, the hostel can be a fun place, but the staff kills the vibe. The breakfast is as good as no breakfast at all. So yeah if you factor in an addition cost of breakfast it stops looking like the value for money deal it seems. Being more amicable and engaging the guests in fun activities will change ratings. Going the extra mile and keeping the room ready at the check in time if the guest has arrived 4 hours early will definitely be a plus.

The Amsterdam Hostel is run down and falling apart. The staff aren't helpful and even ignore security issues like theft. What really got me was that they actually rent the couch in the lounge as an private room. The hostel had some cool guests and a good location, but there are far better places around in this price range.

Rude front of house staff - couldn’t manage a smile Unable to shower as tap broke and only had roasting hot water Room dirty with sticky surfaces which hadn’t been cleaned Had to pay for my two friends on my credit card as they wouldn’t allow separate payments - being awkward for no reason Worst hostel I’ve stayed in - far too overpriced

One step above sleeping outside in the neighborhood it is located in. The hostel is in disrepair, the beds are horrid, uncomfortable and dirty. There are long term "tenants" here in the shared dorms. The workers from countries abroad are unfriendly, not helpful and cold. I would recommend staying somewhere else, and definitely would not stay here ever again.

This hostel is bad, the staff, especially this particular dude with glasses, was the most unwelcoming and rude staff I have ever experienced. Do they not know they are in the hospitality business? The room I stayed in was right next to the kitchen where people would consistently burn their pancakes (the only food provided) , drop pans, and make excessive noise. The walls and floors are so paper thin, people outside of the room woke me up every morning. Also the bathrooms were disgusting.
