This wa my summer break with my granddaughter. We do something together every year. We were made welcome at the Astor from the moment we arrived. The Astor is a lovely old house with lots of quirky features. All the staff were really friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We chose a twin room with en suite, very clean & comfortable. The 'charity breakfast' is a fantastic idea. We checked out the chalk board daily for ideas and what's on. Our whole experience at the Astor was great.

Nothing else to say really. It's by far the best hostel I've stayed in the UK. When I arrived, I've actually been given a tour of the hostel to make sure I would settle nicely. The common areas are not too large, not too small, just enough to make you feel confortable and chat with other guests. The charity breakfast is a real plus, I think it's a good match with the "backpacking from hostel to hostel" spirit. I felt great there and was sorry to leave.

Had the best time at Astor York! The hostel building was beautiful and the kitchen was awesome - has everything you need and heaps of guests cooking meals together. Had some great breakfast chats with others which was good for me as I was travelling solo and met some interesting people. Awesome facilities with laundry for guests, cinema and a pretty outdoor space. Staff were awesome and took me and some others on a great unofficial pub crawl haha. Best hostel in the UK for sure.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in! Felt like a hotel! Beautiful building, great facilities, nice clean rooms and bathrooms, location not too far from center... the staff was great and helped me find what to do in town. Was lacking a little in atmosphere though. I'm 24 and made friends with a 50 year old couple.. but definitely recommended

Gorgeous hostel! Felt like I was at a b&b, but just sharing a room with a few other people. Good location, not far from city centre or train station. The staff are super helpful and nice. Kitchen is great! The hostel is super clean! Great atmosphere. The only thing is the lockers under the beds don’t lock. Overall great stay, definitely recommend.

    Good

My only issues with the place was the location, which is advertised as “10 minutes from train station (true) and historic center of York” is a misrepresentation...more like 25 minute walk to the center(maybe edge but not center where main things are). The biggest shock upon checkin is the many the signs that say “no alcohol from outside may be brought into the hostel”. They have a bar, so not allowed. Bad business model to me to pay them 4 times what I can pay at grocery store. Otherwise ok.
