Overview

Here at The Cambie Hostel – Gastown, our decades of experience mean we know how to look after our guests. Downstairs in the city's oldest bar – The Cambie – you can meet people from all over the world, from artists to professionals to here-for-the-night travellers, and listen to live bands each week. Upstairs there's a kitchen zone in the common room – sink into the comfy sofa to watch some TV. It's a favourite spot to connect to our free Wi-Fi and post pics from the night before.

Location

Find us in the historic heart of Vancouver – Gastown. From the airport, take the SkyTrain for 30 minutes to Waterfront Station and we're a 4-minute walk away. You can also jump on the Airporter, which stops at the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Vancouver – 10 minutes from us on foot. To explore the city, the Granville metro station is only a 10-minute walk away or, to go further out, you can get a train from Waterfront Station. Discover nearby Granville Island (a 30-minute walk) and order some award-winning beer from Canada's first microbrewery, Island Brewery Co.

Rooms and Dorms

Your room has essentials like fresh bed linen, plus an en-suite or shared bathroom with hot showers – you can hire a towel from reception too. Stay in a mixed or female-only dorm for a social atmosphere or a private room if you're a couple or fancy a bit of seclusion. You can store your bag in an under-the-bed locker, just remember to add 'padlock' to your packing list.

Extras and activities

Start your day with a discounted hot breakfast down in the bar. There's also an ATM on site so you can keep your cash flow topped up. Before heading out, talk to our staff to get the lowdown on the must-visit areas – we'll sort you out with a free city map too. But our most popular team member has to be Oreo the cat!

I had a wonderful time at the Cambie! The building is beautiful with a lot of character and unique features. Everything was super clean and the bathrooms and public areas got cleaned daily. The staff are super friendly and helpful. It’s in a great location, making it an easy walk to most of the popular destinations The bar downstairs was a lot of fun, and a great place to meet people. The food and drinks are a reasonable price. I definitely would stay here again.

Great vibe! It was wonderful if you are a solo traveler, as there is a bar just underneath the hostel, where you can meet tons of cool people!

I had an incredible stay! I arrived early and left late, and staff was more than helpful with storing my luggage and always friendly. The bunk beds were incredibly comfortable and I loved that the top bunks were raised enough that I could sit up in my bottom bunk and not hunch over. Storage bins under the beds were great & I loved seeing Oreo each day! The only thing that was slightly inconvenient was the kitchen, it was a very small space and I had to dance around several people while cooking.

Although the atmosphere is pretty frugal you've basically got everything you need and can expect from a hostel. The low price attracts a lot of backpackers, whose concept of hygiene can vary.

    Fabulous

Very old building but well-run hostel. Great Staff, Great Location, Good WiFi, $5 off voucher for breakfast (Bar downstairs serves food, large portions) Cons: Quite loud at night, thin windows and obviously it's above a bar so noisy until 2:30am at weekends. It is cleaned regularly but as the building is old it doesn't look as clean as it should. The showers are tiny, slow water and with no room to hang things or get changed and each one is about a meter away from a toilet which isn't ideal.

    Fabulous

Finding the place was easy. The room was neat and tidy. The bathroom facilities were okay - the shower weren’t great for myself but it is what it is. The room was really hot for the first couple of nights, but once figured out how to turn it down made it pleasant. Due to a bit of rain access door up top was left open to catch the water that was dripping down from the room. The Cambie pub was great and fantastic with food. Fairly cheap and decent. It was great to walk everywhere!

    Very Good

    14 Jan 2020
In general not a bad hostel, cosy and comfy rooms with lockers. Bathrooms are tidy but not really based on a lot of privacy (couple of showers with curtains). Kitchen and common areas are clean and provided with nice boardgames. For the size of the hostel kitchen is underprovided and small. Location is a huge pluspoint, middle of downtown Vancouver. Only located above a popular bar who runs DJ sets till 2AM on common days. Not for light sleepers (Earplugs free at reception).

    Good

Pros: convenient, close to Skytrain station. Good security, you get a key fob to access the doors. Beds were warm and really comfy. Cons: Extremely bad neighborhood, lots of drug addicts and homeless people around. Very unsafe at night. Very old building with lots of creaking. It's an okay place to stay if you just need it for a night but otherwise i'd go elsewhere.
