From New Year’s Eve through the summer to Thanksgiving and Christmas we have all special events covered. Not to mention free activities every night. After mingling with other hostlers, a tour lead group embarks on a pub crawl around NYC. If you can’t make the pub crawl then you can join our nightclubbing events on Friday and Saturday nights. Four to five nights a week we have comedy, improv, and variety shows in the theater room at our hostel. If that’s not enough, you can take Jerry’s Grand Tour, a 12+ hour tour of NYC, on Saturdays from 10am and Tuesdays at 11am. Finally, our volunteer-led outings to the Macy’s firework show July 4th, Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, and Times Square on New Year’s Eve to watch the ball drop have been a great tour tradition at Hostelling International for year!. To sign up for these and many other tours and activities, visit our information desk.

Overview

Looking for a friendly, fun and fantastic hostel? Come and stay at HI NYC Hostel! We're not only set within a spectacular historic castle-like building, but we've also got a huge common room, a billiards room and even a theatre! We're located within easy reach of Times Square and Central Park, so you'll have the city on your doorstep. Cook up a storm in our 36-burner kitchen or catch an improv or comedy show in the theatre – there's something on most nights. We've also got the biggest private outdoor patio in Manhattan.

Location

Nestled in the leafy streets of the Upper West Side, our hostel is a snug, affordable base. There’s a ton of culture up here, thanks to the American Museum of Natural History and the Lincoln Center. Catch a show on Broadway (seven stops on subway line one) or spend a sunny afternoon with the locals in Central Park. When you’re ready to head out, take the subway at 103 St Station (a seven-minute walk away) for the A, B and C lines to Midtown and Tribeca.

Rooms and Dorms

All our rooms are either mixed or single-sex dorms that have been recently renovated, so they're cosy and comfy. They’re heated or air conditioned depending on the season, with free linen and towels on each bed (ideal if you’re travelling light). You can secure your valuables and luggage in our handy lockers – just remember to bring your own lock.

Extras and activities

Our reception's open 24/7, so you can stay out as late as you want in the city that never sleeps. And we love to socialise too! As well as free activities every night, you can join our regular festivities – we'll celebrate everything from July 4th to NYE. First time in New York? We'll take you out on a pub crawl around the city. If you love to dance, we go clubbing on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're here for a while we've got public computers for staying in touch and a laundry service.

Definitely the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at! I’m a 19 year old girl traveling by myself in a big city and I felt completely safe coming back here every night!! So many cool people working and staying here, there was always something to do when I was done exploring the city! I’ve already recommended this place to many of my friends

I just wish that the people I’m sharing the room with realize that it’s mid August and the AC should be left on at all times. We already paid for it. And on my last night in 408...bunk G decided he should have full control of the AC and decided to turn it off as well as put his belongings on top of the controls.

The walking tour round central park was great. However the bar crawl round Brooklyn was horrendous! The woman was useless, and rude! And basically left us there to make our own way back... I had a great time other than this.

Nice, modern hostel with great facilities. A little bit away from all the attractions but easily accessible through the close subway stations. Staff were friendly, rooms and bathrooms were always clean and great cafe for breaky in the morning.

    Fabulous

This hostel was an amazing place to stay if you want to meet people! All the events organized really build up an atmosphere where you can spend an amazing couple of days in NYC. There is also a nice little cafe in the first floor which is not too expensive. The rooms/bathrooms could be a bit nicer however. I stayed in a 12 men dorm, and I can definitely say it's been one of my least favourite rooms to stay in... Too many people makes for a not too awesome smell. Especially considering the price.

    Very Good

Overall the place is nice. a bit crowded but clean. I was a bit disappointed from a few things: - long waiting lines in the reception - The prices specified is the price for members. For non members the beds are more expensive by 4$ per day. it is probably written in small letters somewhere. - There is no possibility to turn of air conditioning in the rooms which makes it noisy at times.

Hostel looks very vice, great outdoor area, but not a great atmosphere during my stay. Staff werent very present, even at check in didnt inform me of anything about the hostel eg where my room was, where the kitchen was, closest subway station, local spots or even laundry. Just checked me in. Also some Hi membership sign up thing when you check in is a hidden cost not mentioned prior to booking added $4US a night.

Upon checking in late at night, I discovered that the plugs above my bed did not work. I went down and spoke to somebody, they told me ask my bunk mate to use his or they could change my room. Bunk mate was gone, went back to ask about room, lady at desk told me there was nothing they could do and I just had to deal with it. Absolutely ridiculous that I paid for “amenities” that everybody else paid for and I didn’t get them.
