Excellent stay! In my opinion, the best hostel in San Francisco! Front desk staff who greeted me at check-in was very friendly and helpful, even though I came after midnight due to late flight (the front desk staff who checked me out at end of stay however was not so nice, very surly). Clean and secure facility at scenic Ft Mason, beautiful views of Alcatraz Golden Gate Bridge and Bay right from hostel! Located in park and hiking bike trails right from door. Easy car share to anywhere.

The building is an Army barracks originally constructed during the Civil War. It overlooks the Bay, and it's in a park so it's quiet. I recommend it. If you cook, there is a supermarket about 1/3 mile from the hostel. Please bring a reusable shopping bag; California requires they charge for paper bags (no plastic ones are allowed) and they were out of cloth ones the whole time I was there. Bunks don't have lamps or outlets, and the laundry room opens at 4:30 pm. No complaints otherwise.

The dorms were not equipped sufficiently for the volume of people. This was the only hostel I’ve stayed in that didn’t have at least one charging point per bunk. In fact, for a 20+ bunk room, I think maybe less than a quarter of the bunks had access to power. The mattresses and pillows were too soft, and there was no atmosphere. The facilities were good, breakfast was good and staff were friendly, albeit, not very efficient.
