Property Description

San Jorge La Laguna has started this home stay program in the village to give something back to the communities around Lake Atitlan, and also to give you a very genuine experience of living with a Maya family to experience their culture and customs.

Meals in the home will be prepared by the mother of the family and you will have the opportunity to enjoy dinner and breakfast meals at home with the family. (Both are included in the price).

Check in:
Monday - 4:00 PM
Sundays: 4:00 PM

This is very appassionated since we need to allocate you with the family where you will sleep!

Public transportation to the Home Stay is 4 Quetzales each way. (Around $0.50 USD)

Where will I stay?
During your trip you can stay one ore more nights with a family from the ethnic group of the Kakchiquel in San Jorge La Laguna.

This experience is runs for 7 years to the village and families who welcome foreigners into their homes. As a responsible traveler, we as guests must be aware of and sensitive to the culture by behaving respectfully during our time with the family and in the village.

Although shy at first, the villagers are very friendly and welcoming people.

The home stay will give you a genuine insight into the everyday lives of a local family. If you take photos of the people in the village, please always ask before you take them.

You might find the housing situation in San Jorge La Laguna rather basic but the reason for doing this home stay is to give a real insight into Guatemala, so you can experience the culture firsthand and interact with the local community on a personal basis.

The coordinators of the home stay program in San Jorge La Laguna are Daniel Jiatz Pocop.

We hope that you enjoy this very unique experience.

Our host family was SO nice! The food was delicious, the room was clean, the village children were friendly and even followed us around for a bit. We definitely recommend Maya Experience Home Stay, just be aware the families don't speak english (great chance to practice your Spanish) and it is not in Panajachel. Getting there is a chicken bus and a 10 minute walk away or you can grab a tuk tuk.

We had an incredible time at our home stay! The family was so nice and so helpful. Both my friend and I happened to be sick when we arrived, and they made our stay there stress free. I would totally recommend! The only downside was that it was not in Panajachel. It was very close (about an 8 minute bus ride that cost us 3q each) but we still had to put some effort in to get into town. This was not an inconvenience for us and we quite liked the town that we were in, but it’s just good to know.

I stayed with a really lovely family. The food was a bit scarce but it was fun to spend a night with a local family and learn about the Mayan culture.

PAY IN QUETZALES!! The family cant exchange USD. If you are looking to experience Atitlan but don't want to deal with the tourist death trap that is Panajachel, this homestay is the absolute best! It is an easy Chicken Bus ride (1 stop, ~2Q) and a quick walk down to the church plaza. You get to stay with a wonderful family and eat traditional meals for breakfast and dinner. What is best is there is a ~1.5 mile hike/walk down to the town playa, which is essentially empty other than Saturday.

Meeting with family went as planned. Host family was kind and showed us around their humble abode. Gave us a comfortable room. Language barrier was tough to deal with as our spanish was minimal and out Ixil was zero. The did provide us a translation sheet with spanish, ixil and english which was helpful. 23 year old daughter spoke some english however. Poked around the little town and played with the children. Ate 2 simple meals that were offered. Cooked pancakes with real maple syrup that we ha

This place is NOT in Panajachel! It's 15min away by car costing 10$ each way. I called them explaining the situation, but they refused to acknowledge and cancel my booking ant to find a way to get there, I can!! and that I can write bad reviews and they don't care. I booked the place based on the location information in the title (which is technically a lie and false) with two suitcases & didn't want to pay $20 for each in and out to Panahachel, to have food or for a simple walk.
