About
Maya Homestay in San Jorge La Laguna
San Jorge La Laguna has established this homestay program to give back to the communities around Lake Atitlán while offering visitors a genuine experience of living with a Maya family and learning about their culture and customs.
Your Homestay Experience
Meals at the home will be prepared by the mother of the family. You will enjoy a delicious dinner and breakfast, both of which are included in the price. After your meals, you will also have the opportunity to learn how to make traditional tortillas.
Check-in
Monday–Sunday: 5:00 PM
Check-out

Please advise us of your expected arrival time. This is an authentic community-based experience, and we need to coordinate your accommodation with a family before you arrive.
Public transportation to the homestay costs approximately 6 Quetzales each way (around US$1.00).
Where Will I Stay?
Visit Lake Atitlán gives you the opportunity to stay for one or more nights with a family from the Kaqchikel Maya community of San Jorge La Laguna.
This homestay experience has been offered in the village for more than 16 years, with local families welcoming international visitors into their homes.
As a responsible traveler, please be respectful and sensitive to the local culture, traditions, and way of life during your stay.
Although some villagers may be shy at first, they are generally very friendly and welcoming. The homestay provides a genuine insight into the everyday life of a local family and an opportunity to interact with the community on a personal level.
If you would like to take photographs of people in the village, please always ask for their permission first.
What to Expect
The accommodation in San Jorge La Laguna may be more basic than what you are accustomed to. However, the purpose of this homestay is to provide an authentic experience of Guatemala, allowing you to experience local culture firsthand and connect with the community.
The homestay is not a luxury accommodation experience—it is an opportunity to share in the daily life, traditions, food, and hospitality of a local Maya family.
Homestay Coordinator
The coordinators of the San Jorge La Laguna Homestay Program are Daniel Jiatz Pocop.
We hope you enjoy this unique and meaningful experience with a local Maya family.
