I really enjoyed my stay at Phil’s Haven hostel. It’s located about 30-40 minutes walk from city center however the area is very quiet and peaceful, hostel has small garden area which is good to relax and enjoy the sun. Rooms are clean and quite spacious. There’s basic breakfast included in the price. The disadvantage is the staff is actually there only until afternoon so with our late check-in we had to call to get in. Overall ifs a nice place to stay definitely worth the price.

Great retreat; panoramic views of the Atlantic; lots of outside seating and space to exercise; Brilliant staff; although it would be useful if the staff spoke better English and if there were a receptionist on duty; no staff on site at night,

Very friendly, clean and deffinetly good value for money! A short walk from the city centre, but far enough away to enjoy the peace and sea view! Couldn't really fault the place! Would highly recommend.

It's an old house, large rooms, the beds are creepy and make a noise every time I move. The breakfast is pretty good, it's a nice place but it takes 25-30 minutes walking to the centre and I walk fast. There is not mango or exotic fruits in the garden.

Clean but the bunk beds were a little shaky. The front door was left unlocked which was a little strange. The breakfast was more like a snack although included in the good value for money price!!

The hostel is a bit far from town - the 40 and 38 can be taken to get back and forth. Walking back and forth takes around 30 to 40 mins depending how fast a walker you are. It’s downhill on the way down (so up hill on the way up).

The hostel is basic but has amazing views - the breakfast they serve is also top notch. I had to cancel my stay for more nights but I tried to do so within the cancellation period. In the end I had to pay to hostel also the 5 euro for deposit i paid to website to get out of my booking so basically i paid $20 euro to stay one night which sucks, and i have never heard of a place asking that but I needed to go stay with my family in the end so what could I do? Recommend a car, Funchal has hills

This is pretty much exactly what you need as budget traveler and nothing more. It gets cold at night so layers are needed. The beds and floors are super creaky. there isn't much of an atmosphere and none of the common areas are inviting. showers are hot, which is great. they have lockers. there was 1 staff member, a young girl, who had been working there for a couple months and couldn't answer a single question about the bus systems - which was totally frustrating. wouldn't stay here again.

Very bad experience. No body was there when I arrived (18:00), the entire hostel was at dark (with no light), and my alleged room was locked. I had to take a different bed which was without a blanket.
