Property Description

Welcome to The Sandino Community! Not your typical hostel, Sandino is an eco-friendly Backpacker's Retreat imbued with a unique, community spirit. We welcome lovely individuals who are kind, open-minded and embrace the concept of community. We offer a great atmosphere for single travellers to meet and socialise, and we welcome people of all sexual orientations. A luscious green oasis in the heart of Berlin, we are are located just a few minutes from a 24-hour tram line, and just three tram stops from the light rail hub at Landsberger Allee (20 minutes from Alexanderplatz).

Please take note: We are not a hotel or your generic mainstream hostel. Our facilities are communal, and as we are seasonal we do not provide indoor heating. Please read our full description before booking to ensure we are the right fit for you.

Unlike other hostels, we offer spacious outdoor areas; a beautiful sunny courtyard surrounded by flowers and vegetation, and a grassy backyard camping area with a perimeter of shady trees, complete with an organic herb garden, an apple tree, and shared with a few friendly pet rescue chickens living out a life of leisure! We offer two private double rooms, a caravan for two, as well as our dorm rooms (4-bed, 12-bed and 9-bed). We also have a couple tents available for rent, as well as space for you to bring your own. (Please note, we do not offer an en-suite bathroom for our private rooms, our bathroom facilities are communal).

We hold an outdoor campfire most evenings, perfect for breaking the ice and getting to know your fellow travellers. We also offer a group meditation in our backyard most mornings, a relaxed way to start the day right for those weary travellers! You can find a partner and engage in a lively game of table tennis or borrow a book from our library and relax on a swinging chair in our courtyard. We have barbecues available to lend, and occasionally we will provide group dinners hosted by a renown chef or show films projected on a large screen. Sandino offers the best of both worlds; a great environment to socialise, but also plenty of corners to retreat to if you want to relax and enjoy some quiet time.

Once an abandoned building, Sandino has been retrofitted by hand of the owner, Michael, into the cosy eco-friendly place it is today. Our decor and furniture are mainly made from repurposed/recycled items, imparting our indoor spaces with a cosy, rustic charm. We harvest rainwater for our garden and mostly utilise environmentally friendly cleaning products, as we aspire to continue to be more planet friendly. We want to meet friendly and interesting people, and provide an inspiring environment for artists, musicians and digital nomads. Sandino isn't a commercial enterprise, but a community with heart, and a chance to experience the real East-Berlin. Unlike other hostels, we do not have any hidden fees or charge extra for bedding and towels. Laundry facilities are available on site for a small cost.

Hippie commune at its finest. Lovely herb garden in the back you're allowed to use. Massive private double room which is what we booked. Cheap bike rentals. Easy tram to town. I'll definitely be back.

Everything was near perfect. The most unique setting and people! Such a chill time. Only issue was the lack of warm water for the showers on the last morning they were opened.

We absolutely loved our time at Sandino. The hostel itself is cute+cozy with tons of plants and they had a fire pit going every night we were there. The people were all friendly and welcoming, including\especially the staff who were kind enough to stay a bit late when our flight got delayed and we were checking in. Yes it is a little outside the city center but right by public transport which was very easy to take. The guides and advice from the staff was great too. Would highly recommend!!

One of the best hostels I have stayed at, very laid back and easy to meet people. Location isn’t perfect but a tram ride from the centre, it probably breeds a better culture anyway !

Amazing atmosphere, great staff and super easy to meet people. Only downside was that it was a bit cold at night in the rooms. Would highly recommend though

This was one of my favorite hostel stays ever. There was a real sense of community and trust in the compound. I loved all the facilities and activities available. Close to bus stop and shops. Friendly, helpful staff.

I had a short stay just for a night here. But I found the place was nice and not very far from Berlin Hbf (40-50 mins including city traffic). There are eateries around, some of which are open till mid-night. Rewe is also nearby. The facilities are just right for the price you pay. Very clean and well maintained dorm. I am thankful for the hospitality I received from Claire. I would recommend this place for people on a budget.

This hostel was a great example of 4 out of 5 hostel. The location is a bit out of town but close to a tram stop, the staff tries real hard to get guest to interact which is a plus. Rooms hold lots of people so make sure you have you earplugs and sleeping mask. Also, another thing is a bit weird is that there are a lot of long term people here so clicks are formed. Over all it’s a cool spot that has a great story about how it as bought and built. I’d recommend to give it a shot.

Really enjoyed it here, booked on a whim as other travellers I’d met were staying. Loved the atmosphere, felt there was a bit of a community feel and people who had stayed a while. Great communal area which made it so easy to talk to other travellers. Loved the feel that it had been a delapidated building turned hostel. There are chickens!
