Property Description

The house where the hostel is located was built in the 1960s, made totally from wooden cedar, and after 6 months of intense refurbishments and construction, the first and the only backpacker hostel in Puerto Maldonado was opened in May 2008. We offer a clean, safe environment, updated facilities, and create an atmosphere that is ideal to meet other travelers - all this at an affordable price. Many people come here for a few days and stay for much longer!

You will find...
JUNGLE TOURS - just ask at our guide desk
excellent quality of sheets and towels (100 percent cotton)
24-hour concierge
wifi that actually works!!
free acces to all our common areas in order to make you feel like at home:
hammocks in a tropical garden
TV room with cable and dvd
books about Peruvian wildlife
snack bar
fully equipped kitchen and dinning room

We are located at only 3 blocks from Main Square and from here you can easily reach very well preserved rainforest with our well priced tours, or with other companies that you can contact here in Puerto Maldonado.

From the airport, you can get a mototaxi or a motokar, and you just have to say that you are going to Jr Gonzales Prada # 161, Primera cuadra (first block) and look for the green sign and the green fence.

Some things to do in town are try typical food at traditional restaurants (peruvian food in the jungle is not the same as peruvian food from lima or cusco!), go out at night to enjoy peruvian and brazilian music to dance and have a lot of fun - very easy to do since we are in the middle of town. From July to October puerto has several 'beaches' along the river front where many people go to swim. Things to do near Puerto Maldonado are visit lakes, creeks, rivers and go into the rainforest to do birding, camping, night walks or excursions to observe anacondas or other exotic wildlife. Really great Hostel and lovely informative staff. The dorms were clean and spacious and the beds were also comfortable. Would definitely recommend staying here 🙂 Je recommande cet hébergement à 100%, votre séjour n'en sera que plus beau. Merci encore de votre hospitalité.

Great place! Clean rooms, comfortable bed, great common area with strong WiFi. A bit quiet at times. Cold water showers (common in this area) but okay bc it is so hot. Walking distance to the center and lots of food. Helped me arrange taxis and my jungle tour! I would highly recommend!

We only stayed here one night before heading out on an Amazon tour. I would advise shopping around the town - we managed to get it $80 cheaper by doing so. The breakfast was great and it was very nice to have a pool in the humidity. We weren’t very happy the morning we were due to head out on our tour - we got back to our room after breakfast to find it had flooded in a sudden rainstorm. Our bags were soaked. We felt they should have been prepared for such a possibility given it’s the rainforest

The Tambopata hostel is very big and offers all that is needed from a hostel. They even have a pool which is nice on hot days. While I was staying, there weren't many people (I stayed 3 nights alone in a 4-bed dorm), and therefore it was lacking some atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and helpful to any requests, still smiling when I came around for the second time that day to ask for the replacement key. The hostel helps with tours which I can highly recommend: Sandoval and Macaw tour.

The staff doesn’t speak much English, so brush up on your Spanish! This isn’t a negative aspect of our stay but many reviews I read stated the the staff doesn’t know English. If you don’t know the language of the country you are staying in, that’s on you! Overall, it was a decent place to stay while you are preparing for other trips and tours. There is no bar but there is a nice pool and tons of hammocks. Best breakfast of any hostel we stayed at in Peru. Comfortable beds with mosquito nets.

Not sure if there are better options in Puerto Maldonado but we thought this was pretty Mediocre. The person at reception only begrudgingly allowed us to see the room before paying on our arrival. There’s not hot water in the showers. The pool is freezing cold. The wall of the rooms facing the hallway is one big window/screen which means that 1. Noise travels very easily between all the rooms as if you’re sharing one big rooms. 2. If the hall light is on you can’t get the room dark.

Pros: Good pool Nice free breakfast buffet Close to the plaza Cons: Charged 5 sol per bag per day in storage (even if you were returning to the hostel) Water sometimes doesn’t work in the taps and showers Dorms don’t have lockers (it was fine for us because we were the only people in both our dorms)
