Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers is your friendly base in the heart of Fiord country. Our awesome team are an adventurous lot, so stop by our travel desk for tips – or to plan your entire trip! Gather a few fellow travellers and stoke up a barbecue in the garden, or cook together in the communal kitchen. Once the stars come out, tell tales on the outdoor terrace, or make for the common room for movie night. Use the free Wi-Fi for extra research and checking in with friends back home.

From Queenstown Airport, it's a 2-hour bus journey from Frankton Bus Interchange to Te Anau. Once you're in Te Anau, you'll be an 8-minute walk from the hostel – just head towards the lake and turn left. On the way, you'll see the Fiordland Information Centre (great for travel info). Turn away from the lake when you leave the bus station and you're just a 3-minute walk from some of the best eateries in town. We recommend a rabbit-shaped bao bun from Habitat food truck!

Rooms and Dorms

Travel is all about new experiences – so how about a night in our shared teepee? Or try glamping in one of our cabins. Both have access to a shower block and all our facilities. In the main house, we have mixed dorms and private rooms, with either en-suite or shared bathrooms. You'll have your own reading light and bed linen's free (towels are available to rent).

Extras and activities

We're right on the lake shore – the best seat in the house is on our front lawn! Although if you've come from a long day exploring you might want to use our laundry facilities before taking in the views. Ask at reception about luggage store when checking out. Heading onto the trails for a few days? Leave your valuables with us and we'll keep them safe.

We had a cabin and it was the cutest. The front porch was a great landing area to put our dirty/wet backpacking gear and shoes so we could keep the inside nice and clean. Bed was comfy, bathrooms and showers were nice, clean, and had hand towels and bathmats. Location is right next to the main street and the supermarket is real close. We had a little trouble figuring out the temperature control unit (but we didn't ask).

Reception staff Irene and Giovanni are very friendly and welcoming. They make the effort to remember you and patiently answer your questions. I loved the close proximity to the lake and the DOC(to check in and get weather updates on the Kepler/ Routeburn). I could jog over and come back for my backpack easily. The beds are comfortable. Kitchen is clean and well organized. The common area is cozy with big windows that overlook the lake. Caught a rainbow after the rain in the morning. Just breatht

What you need before a three-day tramp is a comfi place. We camped (we staked our tents as Sweden and the Netherlands). we could use all the fabulous facilities. After the Keppler track we chose to stay in a bunk (all female dorm -yeah!) Super clean duvet ... dead comfi bed - or was that coz we were so tired? i’d say the shower facilities for the campsite were more luxurious than in the bunk house (we slept in doubtful) but both were immaculately clean staff is super nice too

Such a lovely hostel, no complaints apart from the kitchen facilities were a little sub par - there was only one oven which broke whilst we were using it, and there were not enough cooking utensils. There’s an adorable cat as well

Excellent location opposite lake. Clean and tidy kitchen. Nice tv room with selection of DVDs to watch. Didnt think it was the most social hostel (people seemed to have own hiking plans so were up early). Clean and tidy rooms

We had mixed experiences here. The beds were nice and comfortable, the shelving and charging stations were great, the lounge and view and location was very good and the internet was excellent. The staff were mostly pretty friendly too. However, the cleanliness was a bit lacking and the facilities were poor - the kitchen was very poorly equipped - not much storage, no sharp knives, no way of making non-instant coffee, and the kitchen was pretty poorly cleaned. So Points for view and beds and wifi

Double room was terrible. It smelled mouldy so bad that i felf sick and had problems with breathing. "Kitchen" was lacking most of kitchen stuff. Something wrong with plumbing as you could actually hear everything that anyone did in toilet, disgusting! Worst hostel I've stayed in.
